'Study in India' initiative sees marginal increase in foreign student numbers

  • The report by AISHE has shown that foreign students enrolling under 'Study in India' program has seen a minor increase from previous year.
  • The aim of this programme, which is being run in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), is to boost the number of inbound international students in India and to double India’s market share of global education exports from less than one per cent to 2 per cent.
  • According to the AISHE report, India’s main share of foreign students is limited to the neighbouring countries of Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and a few African nations such as Sudan and Nigeria. 

China to launch Mars probe mission in 2020

  • China has announced its plan to launch its first Mars mission probe in July this year.
  • The Mars probe of China will be launched onboard the Long March-5 Y4 carrier rocket.
  • China has simulated the process of a probe hovering, avoiding obstacles and descending to land on Mars.
  • The biggest challenge for the mission is to safely land on Mars. China’s experiment simulated the gravity of Mars, about one-third of the gravity on Earth, to test the design of the lander.

Rajasthan assembly passes resolution against CAA

  • The Rajasthan government has passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly, urging the Centre to revoke the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
  • With this, Rajasthan became the third state after Kerala and Punjab to introduce a resolution seeking to repeal the CAA.
  • The state government reportedly has also asked the central government to withdraw new fields of information that have been sought for the updation of the National Population Register (NPR).

Nepal offers to mediate between India and Pakistan

  • Nepal became the first South Asian nation to offer to mediate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir and cross-border terrorism.
  • Tensions between India and Pakistan have spiked since India abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Earlier, US President Donald Trump repeated his offer to helpresolve the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan.
  • India maintains that there is no scope for any third-party mediation between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.

Singer Suresh Wadkar conferred with Padma Shri award

  • Veteran singer Suresh Wadkar has been conferred with Padma Shri by the government of India.Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the country.
