Saudi Arabia aims to become net-zero emitter by 2060

  • One of the world’s largest oil producers, Saudi Arabia, announced that it aims to reach “net zero” greenhouse gas emissions by 2060.
  • The kingdom would do so through a so-called “Carbon Circular Economy” approach. That approach focuses on still unreliable carbon capture and storage technologies over efforts to actually reduce global reliance on fossil fuels.
  • The announcement only pertains to Saudi Arabia’s efforts within its national borders, and does not impact its continued aggressive investment in oil and exporting its fossil fuels to Asia and other regions.

Singapore removes India from restricted travel list

  • Singapore removed India from its travel restriction list along with Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • However, travellers would still be required to serve a quarantine period at a dedicated facility on entering the country.
  • All travellers with a 14-day travel history to Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka prior to departure to Singapore will be allowed to enter and transit through Singapore from October 26.

China passes law to reduce homework pressure on students

  • China has passed an education law that seeks to cut the “twin pressures” of homework and off-site tutoring in core subjects.
  • China’s parliament said on October 18 that it would consider legislation to punish parents if their young children exhibit “very bad behaviour” or commit crimes.
  • In recent months, the education ministry has limited gaming hours for minors, allowing them to play online for one hour on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only.
  • It has also cut back on homework and banned after-school tutoring for major subjects during the weekend and holidays, concerned about the heavy academic burden on overwhelmed children.

Joe Biden vows to protect Taiwan if attacked by China

  • President Joe Biden said the US was committed to coming to Taiwan's defence if it comes under attack from China.
  • Joe Biden’s remarks came just a day after his pick for ambassador to China told US senators that “strategic autonomy” in relation to Taiwan is working and there is no need to change it.
  • The United States recognises China’s claims over Taiwan under its One-China Policy, but under the Taiwan Relations Act, it is committed to helping the island nation defend itself against China.

Neera Tanden named as White House staff secretary

  • Indian-American policy expert Neera Tandenhas been named the White House staff secretary.
  • The White House staff secretary works behind-the-scenes but has critical role in the West Wing, responsible for managing paper flow to the President from other areas of the administration and the federal government.
  • Ms. Tanden’s appointment as the White House staff secretary came eight months after she withdrew her nomination as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget due to a stiff opposition from the Republican senators.
