US lifts sanctions on Turkey

  • US president Donald Trump said that his regime will remove sanctions, imposed on Turkey to punish Ankara for launching an offensive against US-backed Kurdish militants.
  • The US president’s decision comes a day after Turkey and Russia reached a deal to push the Kurdish forces from a so-called safe zone along the border and conduct joint patrols in the area.
  • The Kurdish militants dominate the Syrian Democratic Forces, a group that the US armed and trained to spearhead the fight against ISIS in north-east Syria.

Subhash Chopra selected as Delhi Congress chief

  • The Congress party has named Subhash Chopra as the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC).
  • Subhash Chopra is a three-time MLA from Kalkaji. He was first elected as a member of Delhi Assembly in 1998 and retained his seat in 2003 and 2008.
  • Subhash Chopra was Speaker of the Delhi Assembly earlier from June 2003 to December 2003.

Hong Kong drops extradition bill

  • Hong Kong's legislature formally withdrew planned legislation that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China, meeting one of five demands of pro-democracy.
  • Scrapping the bill meets one of the protesters' five key demands, but activists have vowed not to yield until the government fulfils all of them.
  • The protestors also want the unconditional release of those detained, not labelling the protests as riots, and direct elections for the city's leader.

India surges ahead in World Bank’s Ease of Doing Businesses report

  • India jumped 14 places to the 63rd position on the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking.
  • The country also figured among the top 10 performers on the list for the third time in a row.
  • Apart from India, the other countries on this year's 'top 10 performers' list are Saudi Arabia (62), Jordan (75), Togo (97), Bahrain (43), Tajikistan (106), Pakistan (108), Kuwait (83), China (31) and Nigeria (131).
  • One of the main reasons for improvement in India's ranking this year goes to the successful implementation of the Insolvency And Bankruptcy Code.
