Earthquake hits Pakistan

  • A powerful 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck northeast Pakistan, damaging dozens of homes and shops and killing at least 19 people and injuring over 300.
  • The epicentre of the shallow 5.8-magnitude was near the Pakistan Occupied Kashmiri city of Mirpur.

India’s coal imports decline by 4% in 2019

  • India’s coal import declined by 3.7 per cent to 18.93 million tonnes (MT) in July this year from 19.67 MT in the same month a year ago.
  • Volumes during July dropped because of softer demand for power during monsoon with thermal power generation falling 7.2 per cent during the month.
  • However it is expected to increase in August month due to demands from the power generation companies.

Kerala plans to patent temple prasadams

  • The Travancore Devaswom Board, Kerala's apex temple body is planning to obtain patent for the offerings at famous shrines managed by it.
  • The prasadams include ‘aravana', the jaggery dessert offered at Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa Temple; 'unniyappam', the sweet ball prepared at Kottarakkara Ganapathy Temple; and 'palpayasam' and milk porridge at Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna shrine will get patent rights under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act.
  • Obtaining the patent would prevent others from naming or selling the prasadams under the same name.

New Supreme court judges sworn in

  • The Supreme Court has sworn in four new judges thereby increasing the total strength of judges to 34 from 31 as sanctioned under the amended law.
  • The four new judges who will take oath are Chief Justice V. Ramasubramanian of Himachal Pradesh, Chief Justice Krishna Murari from Punjab and Haryana High Court, Rajasthan Chief Justice S.A. Ravindra Bhat and Kerala Chief Justice Hrishikesh Roy.

Sign language dictionary gets 4000 new words

  • Around new 4,000 words are likely to be added to the Indian sign language dictionary in 2020, including words about agriculture for the first time.
  • The Union Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry’s Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) is carrying out the project.
