Air pollution linked with severe Covid-19

  • Common air pollutants, such as small particulate matter and ground-level ozone, are associated with more severe outcomes after COVID-19 infection.
  • The researchanalysed data on 1,51,105 people aged 20 years and older with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in 2020 in Ontario, Canada, not living in a long-term care facility.
  • The researchers modelled historical exposure to three common air pollutants before the pandemic – fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ground-level ozone (O3).

Daniel Vettori appointed assistant coach of Australian Men’s team

  • Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has been appointed as an assistant coach of the Australian men’s cricket team.
  • Vettori has coaching experience in the Indian Premier League, in Australia’s Twenty20 Big Bash competition, and in England and the Caribbean.
  • The former left-arm spinner also has worked as a spin bowling consultant for Bangladesh and with Australia during its winning Test series in Pakistan in March.

Saudi Arabia may amend its blood money law

  • Saudi Arabia is planning to amend its draft Civil Transactions Law by proposing equal blood money for men and women as well as Muslims and non-Muslims in the kingdom.
  • Almost all countries following the Sharia legal system in some form or the other use payment of blood money or Diya in Islamic law.
  • Usually, the indemnity is paid to a victim or to the family of the victim to compensate for deaths, unnatural deaths and accidents.

Heatwaves could worsen inflation

  • Moody’s Investors Service said that the prolonged heatwaves seen in India this summer were credit negative as they would exacerbate inflation pressures and challenges to growth.
  • The prolonged high temperatures, which are affecting much of the northwest of the country, will curb wheat production and could lead to extended power outages.
  • Inflation, it noted, will only be partially alleviated by measures such as the central bank’s policy rate hikes, cap on power prices in exchanges, and the wheat export ban.

Vinai Kumar Saxena appointed LG of Delhi

  • Vinai Kumar Saxena, currently serving as the chairperson of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi.
  • Saxena completed his graduation from Kanpur University. He also has a pilot’s licence and is a philanthropist.
  • He has worked on schemes and products such as ‘Honey Mission’, ‘KumharSashaktikaran Yojana’, ‘Leather Artisans’ Empowerment’, Khadi Prakritik Paint, Project RE-HAB, Khadi Fabric Footwear and Plastic-mixed handmade paper.
