Extreme weather in China kills Marathon runners

  • Twenty-one runners have died after extreme weather struck a long-distance race in north-western China.
  • High winds and freezing rain hit participants in the 100km ultramarathon in the Yellow River Stone Forest, a tourist site in Gansu province.
  • The race was halted when some of the 172 runners went missing, and a rescue operation was launched.Many of the stranded runners reportedly suffered from hypothermia.
  • More than 1,200 rescuers were deployed, assisted by thermal-imaging drones and radar detectors.

Lewandowski breaks Mueller’s Bundesliga record

  • Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski broke Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old Bundesliga goal-scoring record for a season, taking his tally to 41 goals, one more than the former Bayern great.
  • The Poland striker is already second on the all-time scorers list in the Bundesliga, with 277 goals now, behind only Mueller’s 365.
  • Mueller set the previous record in the 1971/72 season with 40 goals, which Lewandowski equalled last week.

Father of China’s hybrid rice dies

  • Yuan Longping, a Chinese agricultural scientist whose breakthroughs in hybrid rice brought food security to China and transformed agriculture worldwide, died aged 91.
  • His discovery of Nan-you No. 2, led to a rise in China’s rice production from 5.69 billion tonnes in 1950 to 19.47 billion tonnes in 2000, for the first time transforming China into a grain surplus country.
  • He developed a hybrid strain of rice that recorded an annual yield 20% higher than existing varieties.
  • Yuan and his team worked with dozens of countries around the world to address issues of food security as well as malnutrition.

Assam to introduce cow protection bill

  • Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi said the State government would introduce a cow protection bill in the next Assembly session.
  • The Governor also underlined the government’s commitment to recover the lands of the satras (Vaishnav monasteries) and places of worship from illegal encroachments.
  • Encroachment of land belonging to many of more than 800 satras allegedly by migrants had been a major election plank of the ruling Party and its regional allies.

Mt. Nyiragongo in Congo erupts

  • Mount Nyiragongo in Congo erupted suddenly, sending lava spilling down its sides and threatening the major city of Goma.
  • Nyiragongo’s last eruption in 2002 had killed 250 people and left 120,000 homeless. It is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is considered among the most dangerous.
  • The eruption was caused when fractures opened in the volcano's side, causing lava flows in various directions.
