Pacific Vanguard naval exercise held near Guam

  • United States, Japan, South Korea, and Australia have kicked off first-of-its-kind naval exercise dubbed as Pacific Vanguard near Guam Islands in Pacific Ocean
  • The exercise was aimed at focusing on live-fire exercises, defensive counter-air operations, anti-submarine warfare, and replenishment at sea.
  • It saw participation of more than 3,000 sailors from the four countries to sharpen skills and trengthen practical cooperation at sea.

ISRO flags off largest shipment of liquid Hydrogen storage tank

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) flagged off shipment of India’s largest liquid Hydrogen storage tank at VRV Asia Pacific production plant at Sri City in Chittoor district.
  • The storage tank has been manufactured by VRV Asia Pacific in a collaborative effort with Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, under the Make in India initiative.
  • The storage capacity of the tank is 120 kilolitres and has Liquid Nitrogen (LIN) shield. Liquid hydrogen is used as fuel for satellite launch vehicles.

India's crude oil imports increases by 14%

  • India's crude oil imports jumped 14% year-on-year in April 2019 to 19.72 million tones. It is highest since October 2018.
  • Oil imports from Iran: It has fallen 57%  year-on-year in April 2019 after waiver from US sanctions on Iran ended recently.
  • Diesel imports also surged to about 250,000 tonnes, the highest since July 2017. While, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports fell more than 10%, but on a year-on-year basis they are up about 45%.
  • India’s demand for LPG had risen to record in FY 2018 amid government measures to provide cleaner cooking fuel to rural households, and analysts expect consumption to keep rising.

Ankur Patwardhan wins 2nd place in German Chemistry Prize

  • Ankur Patwardhan, a scientist from Pune has won second place in 'German Chemistry Prize' in international competition 'Elsevier Foundation-ISC3 Green and Sustainable Chemistry Challenge'.
  • He received the second prize of 25,000 for his project 'Butterfly attractant for pollination and ecosystem health'
  • The competition was held during in 4th Green and Sustainable Chemistry Conference held in Dresden ,Germany.
  • The first prize of 50,000  was won by Dr. Ramia Al Bakain for his project "New green technique to remove toxic metal from wastewater'.
