India abstains from voting on UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka

  • India has abstained from a crucial vote on Sri Lanka’s rights record at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
  • The resolution on ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka’ was, however, adopted after 22 states of the 47-member Council voted in its favour.
  • Sri Lanka has however considered the move as a support and thanked the 14 countries, including India, Japan and Nepal, that abstained from voting.
  • The Sri Lanka resolution was the first to be voted on using the extraordinary e-voting procedures established for the UNHRC 46th Session, which has been held virtually.

Hollywood actor George Segal passes away

  • Oscar-nominated actor George Segal, whose acting credits range from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to The Goldbergs, passed away in California. He was 87.
  • Segal excelled in dramatic and comedic roles and had a life-long passion for the banjo. He performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1981 with his group, the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band.
  • Helater earned an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actor in the harrowing, marital drama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

CJI Bobde recommends Justice Ramana as his successor

  • Chief Justice of India S A Bobde has recommended Justice N V Ramana as his successor. CJI Bobde handed over a copy of the letter of recommendation to his successor Justice Ramana after sending it to the Centre.
  • Ramana’s is set to be appointed as the 48th CJI on April 24. CJI Bobde is slated to retire on April 23.
  • Justice NV Ramana is the senior-most judge in the top court after the CJI. He has a tenure till August 26, 2022.
  • Justice Ramana will be the first judge from Andhra Pradesh high court to serve as the CJI.

Krunal Pandya scores the fastest fifty by an ODI debutant

  • Krunal Pandya has achieved the record ofhitting the fastest-ever fifty on his ODI debut. Krunal brought up his fifty in 26 balls to set the new world record.
  • Krunal got together with Rahul and the pair put on a century-run stand to get India's innings back on track. The duo of Krunal and Rahul gave India the ideal finishing kick.
  • During his innings, Krunal also became the 15th India to get a 50-plus score on his ODI debut. Krunal had made his T20I debut earlier but had to wait a couple of seasons to get into the ODI set-up.

Prasidh Krishna becomes first Indian debutant to pick four wickets in ODI

  • Prasidh Krishna became the first bowler from the country to pick four wickets in his first 50-over international outing.
  • Krishna plays in the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He is followed by 16 other Indian bowlers who have picked 3 wickets on debut.
  • Noel David (3/21), Varun Aaron (3/24), Subroto Banerjee (3/30) and Hardik Pandya (3/31) are the next on the leader board of bowlers with the best figures on ODI debut.
