Pralay surface to surface missile successfully tested

  • India conducted the second trial of ‘Pralay’ conventional ballistic missile off the APJ Abdul Kalam island in Odisha.
  • The developmental trial of the missile was successful with the platform reaching a range of 500 kilometres.
  • ‘Pralay’ is India’s first conventional ballistic missile and is an answer to any conventional missile attack from northern or western borders.
  • The missile development is significant as India had no conventionally armed ballistic missile and was hampered by ‘No First Use’ nuclear policy.

India wins bronze at ACT

  • India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 4-3 in a third-fourth place play-off match to win the bronze medal at the Asian Champions Trophy men’s hockey tournament.
  • India, who were the defending champions along with Pakistan, will return with a consolation prize after having lost to Japan 3-5 in the semifinals.
  • It was India’s second win over Pakistan in the tournament after having beaten the same opponents 3-1 in the round-robin stages.

Himalayan glaciers losing ice quickly than others

  • Himalayan glaciers are melting at an exceptional rate because of global warming, threatening the water supply of millions of people in Asia.
  • Glaciers in the Himalayas have lost ice 10 times more quickly in the past few decades than on average since the last major glacier expansion 400-700 years ago.
  • The study found that 14,798 Himalayan glaciers have lost around 40% of their area compared to the Little Ice Age.
  • The eastern Himalayas are more sensitive to warming and glacier shrinkage. The number and size of glacial lakes are increasing, which causes further acceleration glacier mass loss.

India adds 33 more unicorns this year

  • Adding 33 ‘unicorns’ in a single year has helped India displace the United Kingdom (U.K.) to be third in the list of countries that are home to such enterprises valued at more than $1 billion.
  • India was placed fourth when it came to the number of unicorns last year. However, the U.S. and Chinaare way ahead.
  • The U.S. added 254 unicorns and now totals 487 companies in the coveted list, while China added 74 to take its tally to 301 start-ups having a valuation of more than $1 billion.

UNSC adopts resolution to ease Afghan assistance

  • The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously passed a resolution permitting a carveout in sanctions against the Taliban to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
  • The resolution (2615) mandates a review of the carveout every six months. Additionally, it “strongly encourages” providers of assistance to try and ensure that benefits do not accrue to entities designated on the 1988 Sanctions List.
  • The U.S. and other countries had frozen more than $10 billion after the Taliban ousted the Ashraf Ghani government in August this year.
