Overspill of fats can cause Type 2 diabetes

  • Researchers have observed that people developing Type 2 diabetes­­­­­ have fat over-spills from the liver into the pancreas, triggering the chronic condition.
  • When fat cannot be safely stored under the skin, it is then stored inside the liver, and over-spills to the rest of the body including the pancreas.
  • This 'clogs up' the pancreas, switching off the genes which direct how insulin should effectively be produced, and this causes Type 2 diabetes.

National film awards: Highlights

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu presented the 66th National Film Awards at a ceremony in New Delhi.
  • Bollywood stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal were jointly awarded the  best actor award for their roles in Andhadhun and Uri. 
  • Keerthy Suresh got the best actress award for her Telugu film Mahanati. Gujarati movie Hellaro was awarded for the best feature film.
  • Aditya Dhar was awarded with the Best Director award for his debut Uri: The Surgical Strike.
  • Andhadhun was awarded for Best Hindi film. BadhaaiHo has been awarded for best popular film providing wholesome entertainment.
  • Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman was awarded for the best film on social issues. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavaat was awarded for best choreography for the song Ghoomer.  Bhansali received best music director award.
  • Marathi movie Paani was awarded for Best Film on Environment Conservation and Preservation.

Ola to award 'Guardian' safety feature

  • In a bid to make travelling by Ola safer, the home-grown company is rolling out an AI-enabled safety feature called ‘Guardian’.
  • After running a pilot across multiple cities in India and international markets, the ‘Guardian’ feature is going live in 16 Indian cities as well as Perth in Australia.
  • The ‘Guardian’ feature uses real-time data from rides to automatically detect irregular trip activity, including prolonged stops and unexpected route deviations.
  • These alerts are flagged off in real-time to Ola’s dedicated 24x7 Safety Response Team, who immediately reach out to customers and drivers to confirm if they’re safe and offer on-the-call assistance until ride completion.

Centre approves loan to Tamil Nadu for constructing fishing harbour

  • The Centre has approved a 453-crore loan at a subsidised interest rate of five per cent to the Tamil Nadu government for setting up three fishing harbours.
  • The funds will be released from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF).
  • An agreement was signed between the Union fisheries ministry, Tamil Nadu government and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard).

Finance ministry denies Swiss bank details

  • The Finance Ministry has declined to share Swiss bank accounts details of Indians saying it is covered under "confidentiality provisions" of a tax treaty signed between India and Switzerland.
  • It also said that disclosure of tax related information and information sought/obtained from foreign governments is exempted under section 8 (1) (a) and 8 (1) (f) of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
  • India had in September got the first set of Swiss bank account details of its nationals under a new automatic information exchange pact within the framework of global standards on AEOI or Automatic Exchange of Information.
