Tamil Nadu wins Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy

  • Shahrukh Khan smashed a dramatic last ball six to help Tamil Nadu defend the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 title with a thrilling four-wicket win over Karnataka in the summit clash.
  • Needing 16 runs off the last over, power-hitter Khan kept his cool under pressure to clobber the final delivery over deep-square leg to take Tamil Nadu to 153 for 6 and seal a famous win.
  • Tamil Nadu thus avenged their heart-breaking one-run loss to Karnataka in the 2019 final.
  • Earlier, Karnataka rode on some aggressive batting by AbhinavManohar, Praveen Dubey and J Suchithto post 151 for 7.

Karnataka to get its first Marine sanctuary

  • Karnataka’s first sanctuary for marine animals will come up at Honnavar in Uttara Kannada.The Karnataka State Wildlife Board has approved the creation of the sanctuary.
  • The creation of the sanctuary is aimed at strengthening the focus on the conservation of marine animals, including Olive Ridley sea turtles.
  • The turtles breed on the coastal belt in places like Honnavar and Kundapur. The jurisdiction of the sanctuary will cover both beach and sea areas.

Pakistan allows Indian aid to Afghanistan to pass through

  • Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan said his Government would allow the aid to transit over the land route through Pakistan.
  • India had protested the delay in Pakistan’s permissions for the aid to be facilitated, including most recently at the 8-nation Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan in New Delhi.
  • The offer of wheat and other medical supplies was made formally to the Taliban regime by a Ministry of External Affairs delegation that attended the Moscow format conference in Russia.

Former South Korean dictator Chun Doo-hwan passes away

  • Former South Korean military strongman Chun Doo-hwan, who took power in a 1979 coup and brutally crushed pro-democracy protests passed away. He was 90.
  • Chun was an army major general when he seized power in December 1979 with his military cronies.
  • He was tried for corruption, mutiny and treason and was sentenced to death upon conviction. He was pardoned in 1997 in a bid for national reconciliation.

Col Santosh Babu honoured with Mahavir Chakra

  • Colonel Santosh Babu, who laid down his life while resisting a vicious attack by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) at Ladakh’s Galwan Valley last year, will be accorded the MahaVir Chakra posthumously.
  • Colonel Babu led the defence from the front despite being grievously injured, in recognition of which he is being posthumously accorded the military decoration.
  • The MahaVir Chakra is awarded for acts of courage shown in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea, or in the air.
