Navy ships reach Guam for Malabar Naval Exercise

  • Two Indian Navy warships reached Guam to participate in the Malabar Naval Exercise, in which all four member nations of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue have been participating since 2020.
  • INS Shivalik and INS Kadmatt reached Guam, a US territory, as part of their on-going deployment to nations in South East Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
  • MALABAR series of maritime exercises commenced in 1992 as a bilateral IN-USN exercise and has grown in stature over the years to include four prominent navies in the Pacific and Indian Ocean Region.
  • MALABAR-21 would witness high-tempo exercises conducted between Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes, Submarines, Helicopters and Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft of the participating navies.

Shaili Singh wins silver in long jump of U-20 World Athletics championships

  • India’s Shaili Singh won the silver medal in women’s long jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi with a best attempt of 6.59m.
  • She came agonisingly close to the gold medal, falling short by just 0.01m, with Sweden’s Maja Askag winning it with a best effort of 6.60m.
  • Ukraine’s Mariia Horielova took the bronze medal. It was India’s second silver medal and third overall at this year’s edition of the U20 Championships.

Sri Lanka plans biometric ID cards for elephants

  • Sri Lanka will issue captive elephants with their own biometric identity cards and ban their riders from drinking on the job under a wide-ranging new animal protection law.
  • Many rich Sri Lankans keep elephants as pets to show off their wealth, but complaints of ill treatment and cruelty are widespread.
  • The new measures are aimed at protecting the animals’ welfare and include strict regulations around working elephants, as well as mandating a daily two-and-a-half-hour bath for each creature.
  • The new law will require all owners to ensure that animals under their care have new photo identity cards with a DNA stamp.

La Ganesan appointed Manipur governor

  • Senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu La. Ganesan was appointed as the new governor of Manipur.
  • The post of the governor had fallen vacant after the retirement of Najma Heptulla earlier this month.
  • Heptulla had demitted office on August 10 and on the same day the charge was given to Sikkim Governor Ganga Prasad.

Former UP CM Kalyan Singh passes away

  • Former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh succumbed to prolonged illness at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow. He was 89
  • Apart from being the CM of U.P., Mr. Singh also served as the Governor of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Singh left the BJP for the first time in 1999 after his verbal attacks on then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee before returning to the saffron fold in 2004.
  • In 2009, he left the BJP again due to differences over distribution of tickets and joined hands with the SP but soon parted ways with Mulayam Singh.
