Sanjeev Sanyal inducted into Economic Advisory Counsil to PM

  • Finance Ministry’s Principal Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal has been inducted as a full-time member of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).
  • The EAC-PM is an independent body constituted by the Union government to advise the prime minister on economic matters.
  • Sanjeev Sanyal had advised the finance ministry to devise economic policies during the pandemic.

New frog species discovered in Western coastal plains

  • Researchers have discovered yet another new frog species from the freshwater bodies of the western coastal plains of India.
  • The frog had been scientifically named EuphlyctisJaladhara with a common name “Jaladhara skittering frog”, suggestive of the frog’s habitat. 
  • Initially, it was first spotted in fresh water bodies around the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in Eranakulam, and then multiple populations were identified all along the western coastal plains from Kerala to Gujarat.

India sends first consignment of aid to Afghanistan

  • Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla flagged off a convoy of 50 trucks carrying 2500 MT of wheat as humanitarian aid for Afghanistan at the India-Pakistan integrated check post (ICP).
  • The wheat is expected to be sent across Afghanistan to help people deal with the crisis caused by food shortages and an economic collapse after the Taliban takeover of Kabul.
  • The wheat assistance will be delivered in multiple consignments and will be handed over to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

DMK wins Tamil Nadu local body polls

  • The ruling party of Tamil Nadu, DMK registered landslide victory in the urban local body elections, winning all 21 city corporations.
  • The main opposition AIADMK came a distant second winning over 2,000 ward member posts, while the BJP which fought the polls alone, won 22 seats in municipal corporations, 56 in municipalities and 230 in town panchayats.
  • Among the DMK allies, the Congress won 73 corporation seats, 151 municipal wards and 368 town panchayat seats.

Biden imposes sanctions on Russian banks and Oligarchs

  • U.S. President Joe Biden ordered heavy US financial sanctions against Russian banks and oligarchs, stepping up the West’s confrontation with Moscow.
  • Biden accused Mr. Putin of flagrantly violating international law in what he called the “beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” and promised that more sanctions would be coming if Putin proceeds further.
  • The President joined the 27 European Union members who unanimously agreed to levy their own initial set of sanctions targeting Russian officials over their actions in Ukraine.
