Buddhist Zen monk ThichNhatHanh passes away

  • One of the world’s most influential Buddhist monks, ThichNhatHanh, has died in Vietnam at the age of 95.
  • ThichNhatHanh lectured at Princeton and Columbia universities in the United States in the early 1960s.
  • He returned to Vietnam in 1963 to join a growing Buddhist opposition to the US-Vietnam War, demonstrated by self-immolation protests by several monks.
  • Towards the height of the Vietnam War in the 1960s, he met US civil rights leader Martin Luther King, whom he persuaded to speak out against the conflict.

Himachal and Haryana to revive Saraswati river

  • The Haryana and Himachal Pradesh governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a dam in Himachal Pradesh for reviving Saraswati river.
  • The dam would not only revive the Saraswati river but also help in water conservation in the region.
  • With the construction of the dam, the Saraswati river would flow throughout the year with 20 cusecs water all the time.
  • The course of the Ghaggar river is believed to be the course of the Saraswati river. This project would go a long way in the promotion of tourism activities in the area.

Centre bans Pakistani YouTube channels

  • The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordered a ban on 35 YouTube channels, two websites, two Twitter accounts, two Instagram accounts and one Facebook account that were operating from Pakistan.
  • The channels spread “anti-India” content with a focus on the Indian armed forces, Jammu and Kashmir, India’s foreign relations, and public order, which attracted the provision of Section 69-A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
  • The blocked channels included ‘Khabar with Facts’, ‘Global Truth’, ‘Information Hub’, ‘ApniDuniya TV’ and ‘Khoji TV’. The blocked sites were White News and DNow, whose YouTube channels were also blocked.

US lawmakers urge for WTO litigation against India on wheat subsidies

  • Top American lawmakers have urged the Joe Biden administration to initiate a litigation process at the World Trade Organization against India subsidising its farmers over half of the value of production for wheat.
  • The US has previously highlighted India’s non-compliance through counter-notifications at the WTO Committee on Agriculture.
  • The distortion of international wheat and rice trade from these policies is severe, costing US wheat farmers more than USD 500 million per year in lost income.

Myanmar refugees crossover into Mizoram

  • Over 2,000 people from Myanmar’s Chin state have crossed over into the border villages of Mizoram since January 5.
  • Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, Chin state has been in the forefront of the armed resistance to the junta and has, therefore, faced the brunt of the Myanmar army’s wrath.
  • Mizoram shares a 510-km border with Myanmar at Chin state, and people of common ethnicities live on both sides of the border.
