Marijuana use linked to increased heart problems

  • Observational studies have linked marijuana use to a range of cardiovascular risks, including stroke, arrhythmia and diseases that make it hard for the heart muscle to pump properly.
  • Marijuana use, both recreational and medical, is increasing nationally yet many of its cardiovascular effects remain poorly understood.
  • The researchers outline the ways that the components and compounds in marijuana may affect the heart and other tissue at a molecular level and the drug interactions that marijuana can have with drugs that are commonly given to cardiology patients.

BHAI app for women in distress

  • Youngsters from Vizag have developed an app for android phones titled ‘Bhai, which will make it easy for the women in distress to alert the police and family members.
  • In case of emergency, the users can hit the ‘alert button’ in the app and a message will be sent to the nearest police station. The family members or trusted contacts who have installed the app will also receive the alert.
  • People who have downloaded the app will receive a notification as soon as any user clicks the alert button.
  • They can also see the location of the person in distress. The users can add trusted contacts in the app. The app will send alerts to the people within 20 km radius.

Centre seeks guidelines for executing convicts

  • The Centre has moved the Supreme Court for fixing a seven-day deadline for the execution of death row Convicts.
  • The plea of the ministry of home affairs (MHA) assumes significance in view of the death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case of 2012 filing review, curative and mercy petitions, which have delayed their hanging.
  • The MHA's plea sought a direction from the top court in fixing the deadline for filing of curative pleas after the rejection of review petitions.
  • It also sought a direction that if the convict of death sentence wants to file mercy petition, it would be mandatory for a convict of death sentence to do so only within a period of seven days from the date of receipt of death warrant issued by the competent court.

Monty Python star Terry Jones passes away

  • Terry Jones, a member of the Monty Python comedy troupe, has died. He was 77.
  • With Eric Idle, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman and Terry Gilliam, Jones formed Monty Python’s Flying Circus, whose anarchic humour helped revolutionize British comedy.

Vyomamitra robot to be sent to Space by ISRO

  • ISRO has unveiled its first humanoid robot equipped with Artificial Intelligence technology. The robot is named 'Vyomamitra' and will embark on the trial mission for Gaganyaan.
  • ISRO will send the human-resembling model in a space capsule around the end of 2020 or early 2021 to study how she and later real astronauts,  respond to living outside earth in controlled zero-gravity conditions.
  • She can detect and give out warnings if environmental changes within the cabin get uncomfortable to astronauts and change the air condition, helping scientists to know the real condition.
