Plans to build new parliament Kick starts

  • The plot opposite the Parliament House is likely to be used for the construction of a new Parliament building.
  • The plot is opposite the Parliament House, with Red Cross Road to its north, Raisina Road to its south and Parliament to its west.
  • There  are also plans under which Prime Minister’s residence could be shifted closer to the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block.

Remote ultrasound images using laser

  • Engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have come up with an alternative to conventional ultrasound that does not require contact with the body to see inside a patient.
  • The new laser ultrasound technique makes use of an eye- and skin-safe laser system to remotely image the inside of a person, which may one day allow doctors to assess the health of infants, burn victims, and accident survivors in hard-to-reach places.
  • By mechanically scanning the lasers over the body, scientists can acquire data at different locations and generate an image of the region.

Mirabai Chanu wins gold in Qatar international cup

  • Former world champion weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu notched up the women's 49kg category gold medal at the 6th Qatar International Cup.
  • Chanu won gold with an effort of 194kg in the Olympic qualifying event, which was way below her best of 201kg.
  • Chanu lifted 83kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk to finish on top of the podium.

Portugal announces Gandhi citizenship education prize

  • Portugal Prime Minister Antonio Costa has announced the Gandhi Citizenship Education Award, inspired by his thoughts and life, to help perpetuate the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Costa said that Gandhi Citizenship Award will be dedicated to social welfare. This year’s prize will be for animal welfare.
  • Mr Costa was addressing the second meeting of the National Committee for Commemoration of the 150th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at New Delhi.

Kannada writer L.S. Sheshagiri Rao passes away

  • Noted Kannada writer and critic LS Sheshagiri Rao, popularly known as Prof LSS, passed away following age-related ailments.
  • Apart from critical works, LSS is known for the English-Kannada dictionary he compiled.
  • He has won many honours, including Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Rajyotsava award, Masti Award and Karnataka Sahitya Academy award.
