Six new lizard species discovered in western Ghats

  • Scientists have discovered six new lizard species of Dravidogecko family in the Western Ghats. 
  • Dravidogecko is a small size lizard found in wet forests in mid-to-high elevations.
  • The reptile was found in the mountain range from Kerala’s Wayanad district to Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district.
  • The six new species have been named as Dravidogecko Septentrionalis, D Janakiae , D Tholpalli, D Meghamalaiensis, D Douglasadamsi and D Smithi.

NCRB report

  • The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has published the country’s crime statistics for the year 2017, showing a 5.9% drop in murder cases over the previous year.
  • Among all murders, dispute was found to be the most common motive for murders.
  • As per the report, 3,59,849 cases of crime against women were reported in the country. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 56,011 cases followed by Maharashtra with 31,979 cases and West Bengal 30,002.
  • The NCRB for the first time collected data on circulation of false/fake news and rumours.
  • Under the category, maximum incidents were reported from Madhya Pradesh (138), Uttar Pradesh (32) and Kerala (18).
