Supreme court rejects petition seeking enquiry into conduct of Ranjan Gogoi

  • The Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking an in-house inquiry against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi over allegations of “misconduct”.
  • Gogoi demitted office in November 2019 and was recently nominated by the President to become a member of the Rajya Sabha.
  • Arun Ramchandra Hublikar, a resident of Pune, had filed the petition against Gogoi in 2018. Hublikar demanded that a three-judge committee should be constituted under the in-house procedure for remedial action against judges of the higher judiciary whose conduct does not follow the prescribed Restatement of Judicial Values adopted by the Supreme Court in 1999.

Turkey’s Chora church converted into mosque

  • Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has reconverted the historic Chora church, one of Istanbul’s most celebrated Byzantine buildings, into a mosque, a month after opening the famed Hagia Sophia to Muslim worship.
  • The mediaeval Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora, built near the ancient city walls of Constantinople, contains 14th-century Byzantine mosaics and frescoes showing scenes from biblical stories.
  • Erdogan has positioned himself as a champion of Turkey’s pious Muslims and last month joined tens of thousands of worshippers in the first prayers at Hagia Sophia in 86 years.

Sevilla wins UEFA champions league

  • Europa League kings Sevilla won the tournament for a record sixth time thanks to victory over Inter Milan in a thrilling final in Cologne.
  • It means Inter Milan's wait for a trophy will tick over into a 10th year at leastLukaku gave the Italian side an early lead from the penalty spot for his 34th goal of the season, extending his record of scoring in consecutive Europa League games to 11.
  • Inter were level when Diego Godin nodded in to make it 2-2 in the 35th minute.It was a first trophy in the managerial career of Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui, whose side are unbeaten since February, a run of 21 games.

Rajiv Kumar appointed as Election Commissioner

  • Former finance secretary Rajiv Kumar, who retired earlier this year, was appointed election commissioner on Friday. Kumar will be the chief election commissioner (CEC) in the next general election in 2024, going by the seniority convention.
  • Kumar, a retired 1984-batch IAS officer from Jharkhand cadre, fills up the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ashok Lavasa, who will be moving to Manila as vice-president of Asian Development Bank.
  • Kumar, as per the seniority principle, will take over as CEC when Sushil Chandra retires in May 2022. He will have a tenure of two years and nine months in the top post.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award

  • India's limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma is all set to get India's highest sporting award - The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. The list was approved by the Sports Ministry.
  • Rohit, along with para-athlete Mariappan Thangavelu, table tennis champion Manika Batra, wrestler Vinesh Phogat and hockey player Rani Rampal were finalised to get the prestigious award.
  • Before Rohit, only three more Indian cricketers - Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli have received India's highest sporting honour.
