Koyas seek recognition for Gondi language

  • People belonging to the Koya tribe observed the Gondi Language Day in the Agency areas of East Godavari district, and sought inclusion of their language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
  • The Gondi Language Day is observed on July 21 as per the Delhi Convention - 2018 organised by the Adivasi Samkshema Parishad (ASP).
  • There are demands for the inclusion of 38 languages, including Gondi, in the Eighth Schedule.In 2004, four languages – Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali – were added to the Eighth Schedule.

Byju’s acquires US reading start-upEpic

  • Byju’shas acquired US-based reading platform Epic for $500 million, continuing large acquisitions to expand its education services beyond the Indian market and across categories.
  • Epic is built on a collection of over 40,000 popular, high-quality books from 250 of the world’s best publishers.
  • Its recommendations are customised to the child’s interests and parents can track progress and see the time spent in reading. It also has original stories which will appeal to kids.
  • This is not Byju’s first foray into the US. In 2019 it acquired educational games-maker Osmo. Last year Byju’s also acquired coding start-up WhiteHat Jr.

Lightweight anti-tank missile tested by DRDO

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully flight-tested an indigenously developed low weight man-portable anti-tank guided missile.
  • The missile is being developed to strengthen the combat capabilities of the Indian Army. It is based on fire and forget principle.
  • The missile was launched from a man-portable launcher integrated with a thermal site and the target was mimicking a tank. The missile has already been successfully flight-tested for the maximum range.

Liverpool stripped of its UNESCO World Heritage status

  • Liverpool has been stripped of its World Heritage status after a UN committee found developments threatened the value of the city's waterfront.
  • UNESCO had said that the developments, including the planned new Everton FC stadium, had resulted in a "serious deterioration" of the historic site.
  • Liverpool becomes only the third site to lose its World Heritage status since the list began in 1978, the other two being Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in 2007 and the Dresden Elbe Valley in Germany in 2009.

Wally Funk becomes oldest person to reach Space

  • Wally Funk became the oldest person to reach space some 60 years after first undergoing astronaut training.
  • Ms. Funk was one of the so-called Mercury 13 group of women trained to become NASA astronauts in the 1960s but was passed over because of her gender.
  • She was one of Jeff Bezos' three co-passengers aboard his company Blue Origin's New Shepard launch vehicle to take a historic suborbital flight.
  • Ms. Funk was the first female inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration and the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.
