Iceland tops Kids Right Index 2019

  • Iceland has topped recently released Kids Right Index 2019 released by Kids Right Foundation in cooperation with Erasmus University, Rotterdam.
  • Iceland was followed by Portugal. India was ranked 117th out of 181 countries.
  • The index ranks countries on the basis of how much they adhere to and are equipped to improve child rights.
  • It ranks on five indicators: right to life, right to education, right to health, right to protection and enabling environment for child rights.

SEBI allows mutual funds in ETCDs

  • Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has allowed mutual funds to participate in exchange-traded commodity derivatives (ETCD).
  • They are permitted to participate in ETCDs through hybrid schemes, which include multi-asset scheme and gold ETFs.
  • However, SEBI has decided to keep away MFs from trading in derivatives of sensitive commodities. Thus, mutual fund schemes cannot invest in physical goods except in ‘gold’ through ETFs.
  • Moreover, Mutual fund schemes can participate in ETCDs of particular goods (single), not exceeding 10% of net asset value of the scheme.
  • However, this limit of 10% is not applicable for investments through gold ETFs in ETCDs having gold as underlying.

President gives assent to Gujarat chain law

  • President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to Criminal Law (Gujarat Amendment) Bill 2018 aimed at strengthening the punishment meted out to those found guilty of chain snatching.
  • Under new law, chain snatchers will face upto 10 years in jail instead of 3 years elsewhere in the country in addition to a fine of Rs 25,000.
  • Under it, this crime will now attract charges under sections 379(A) and 379(B) as this law legislators amends Section 379 of the IPC in September of 2018.

China delivers 1st overhauled JF-17 fighter jet to Pakistan

  • China has delivered first overhauled multi-role JF-17 fighter jet to Pakistan Air Force.  It was delivered by Chinese state owned Changsha 5712 Aircraft Industry Co Ltd.
  • It was delivered as part of project undertaken by two countries over decade ago for the development and manufacture of the aircraft.
  • The overhaul of this fighter jet includes major maintenance, featuring repairs and replacement of old components, including airframe and engine.
  • China and Pakistan had jointly developed and manufactured single-engine light JF-17 jets over decade ago. China had delivered its first batch in 2007.

Renowned Filmmaker Vijaya Mulay passes away

  • Renowned filmmaker, film historian, researcher and educationist Vijaya Mulay passed away in New Delhi. She was 98.
  • She had founded the Delhi Film Society in 1959. She also has served as joint secretary of the Federation of Film Societies.
  • She had made her directorial debut with film The Tidal Bore, which had entered into Manheim Film Festival.
  • She is most famously known for her 1974 film- Ek Anek Aur Ekta, which was awarded National Film Award for Best Educational Film
