Wettest place on Earth shows decreasing rainfall trend

  • An analysis of data from various rain gauge stations across north-east India shows a decreasing pattern in rainfall since 1970s.
  • Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, places which receive the highest rainfall in the region, have recorded a decrease in average rainfall in recent decades. Cherrapunji, earlier the wettest place on Earth, showed a larger decrease thus shifting the distinction to Mawsynram.
  • Rainfall study in northeast India had so far focused on only one or two cities for a shorter period. To broadly understand rainfall patterns in this region, scientists measured daily and continuous rainfall at 16 stations across seven states of north-east India between 1901 and 2019.
  • Population growth and human activities such as agriculture have caused deforestation and reduction in ice and snow in northeast India. This has increased water bodies, and urban and built-up lands between 2001 and 2018.
  • Such changes in land-use patterns, coupled with variations in temperature in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea, remarkably contributed to a decreasing trend in rainfall.

V. Narayanasamy resigns as Puducherry CM

  • Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan shortly after a Motion of Confidence moved by him on the floor of the Legislative Assembly was defeated.
  • Resignations by half-a-dozen legislators from the Congress and the DMK had reduced the government to a minority.
  • Soon after the House assembled on the directions of the Lt. Governor to the government to prove its majority, Mr. Narayanasamy moved a Motion of Confidence.
  • Mr. Narayanasamy called on Lt. Governor Ms. Soundararajan, and submitted the letter of resignation of the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers.

Famous jurist Rama Jois passes away

  • Eminent jurist and former Governor of Bihar and Jharkhand, Justice (Retd) M Rama Jois, passed away in Bengaluru. He was 89.
  • Mandagadde Rama Jois was born in Karnataka's Shivamogga district and had also served as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
  • He was also a former Rajya Sabha member. Jois was also an activist, who was imprisoned in jail during emergency period.

Novak Djokovic wins Australian open

  • Novak Djokovic remaining an unbreakable force as he thrashed Daniil Medvedev to claim a record-extending ninth Australian Open title.
  • The world number one's 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 triumph secured his 18th Grand Slam title, bringing him within tantalising reach of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's all-time men's record of 20.
  • Djokovic has won six of the last 10 major tournaments and is assured of remaining at No. 1 in the rankings at least through March 8. That will give him 311 weeks in the top spot, breaking a mark held by Federer.

Former SC judge P B Sawant passes away

  • Former Supreme Court judge P.B. Sawant passed away at his Pune residence after a brief illness on February 15, aged 90.
  • Justice Sawant was in the news in recent years for being one of the chief organisers, along with retired Bombay High Court judge B.G. Kolse-Patil, of the original and controversial ‘Elgaar Parishad’ held in December 2017.
  • Justice Sawant started practising in the Bombay High Court in 1973 and was appointed justice in the Supreme Court in 1989 before retiring in 1995.
  • In 2003, Justice Sawant had chaired a commission formed to investigate corruption charges against four Ministers in the then Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government in Maharashtra.
