SEBI suspends futures trading in farm crops

  • Market regulator SEBI has issued an order suspending futures trading in paddy, wheat, Bengal gram, mustard seeds and its derivatives, soyabean and its derivatives, crude palm oil and green gram for a year.
  • India is the world’s biggest importer of vegetable oils. Prices of these kitchen staples have been spiralling in recent months.
  • The government as well as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are struggling to hold prices of food items to curb inflation and measures are believed to be steps in this direction.

Uzra Zeya appointed US special envoy to Tibet

  • U.S. official Uzra Zeya has been appointed the country’s new Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. She will hold the position concurrently with her current role as Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights.
  • The coordinator’s role involves promoting “substantive dialogue” between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama.
  • The coordinator is also supposed to promote the unique identity of Tibet, safeguards human rights of Tibetans and coordinates U.S. policy on Tibet.

Loksabha passes bill to link elector rolls with Aadhaar

  • The Lok Sabha passed a Bill to link electoral roll data with the Aadhaar ecosystem without any substantial discussion.
  • The Bill allows electoral registration officers to ask for Aadhaar numbers of applicants who want to register as voters to establish the identity of the applicant.
  • People who cannot furnish their Aadhaar numbers will be allowed to present other documents to establish identity.

Pradeep Rawat appointed ambassador to China

  • Senior Indian diplomat Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who is well-versed in negotiating with Chinese diplomats, was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to China. Rawat will succeed VikramMisri.
  • An Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1990 batch, Rawat is currently the country’s envoy to the Netherlands.
  • He was joint secretary (East Asia) in the MEA when the Doklam border stand-off took place in 2017.
  • Rawat served as India’s envoy to Indonesia and Timor-Leste from September 2017 to December 2020. He had earlier served in Hong Kong and Beijing and speaks fluent Mandarin.

Gabriel Boric elected president of Chile

  • Gabriel Boric, who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president.
  • Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast.
  • Both candidates offered starkly different visions for the country, and both are outsiders representing political parties that have never been in government.
