US lawmakers planning to replace Chinese telecom equipment

  • US lawmakers will back $1.9 billion to fund a program to remove telecom network equipment that the U.S. government says poses national security risks.
  • Lawmakers will also back $3.2 billion for an emergency broadband benefit for low-income Americans.
  • The Federal Communications Commission had formally designated China's Huawei Technologies Co and ZTE Corp as threats, a declaration that bars U.S. firms from tapping an $8.3 billion government fund to purchase equipment from the companies.
  • Earlier this month, the FCC finalized rules that require carriers with ZTE or Huawei equipment to "rip and replace" that equipment but is awaiting funding from Congress.

Congress leader Motilal Vora passes away

  • Veteran Congress leader Motilal Vora passed away in Delhi. He was 93. Vora had recently recovered from Covid-19.
  • A former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and a former governor of Uttar Pradesh, Vora served as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) treasurer for 16 years till 2018 when the post was handed over to another senior leader Ahmed Patel.
  • He was also the AICC general secretary (administration) before the recent party reshuffle by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Organic farming belt to come up in UP

  • The Uttar Pradesh agriculture and horticulture departments, along with the Jal Shakti department, is rolling out a plan to turn a five-kilometre radius along both sides of the Ganga into an organic farming belt.
  • The villages and farmers settled on both sides of Ganga will be encouraged to go organic by discouraging the use of chemicals such as fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides and grow grains, fruits, flowers organically. The farmers will also be given training in organic cultivation.
  • Farmers will be provided with the necessary equipment at concessional prices, along with training and information for this. The departments are in the process of identifying organic crops, products and provide special markets for the scheme.

Vijayawada diesel loco shed wins national energy award

  • The South Central Railway’s Diesel Loco Shed (DLS) at Vijayawada has bagged the first prize in energy conservation among the industry/railway workshops in the country for saving more than one lakh units.
  • These awards are declared for the year 2020 as part of National Energy Conservation Week being celebrated from December 14 to 21.
  • At present, the DLS is maintaining diesel locos, DEMUs and coaches. The shed is provided with energy efficient equipment such as LED lighting, brush less DC motor fans, inverter type AC units and star-rated machinery.

India to integrate more countries into coastal radar network

  • In order to expand India’s assistance for capacity building to Indian Ocean littoral states, efforts are in advanced stages to set up coastal radar stations in Maldives, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
  • Mauritius, Seychelles and Sri Lanka have already been integrated into the country’s coastal radar chain network. Similar plans are in the pipeline with Maldives and Myanmar and discussions are ongoing with Bangladesh and Thailand.
  • The Indian Navy’s Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) located in Gurugram which was set up after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks is the nodal agency for maritime data fusion.
