Indore ranked India’s cleanest city

  • Madhya Pradesh’s Indore has been adjudged India’s cleanest city for the fifth consecutive year by SwachhSurvekshan 2021.
  • Surat and Vijaywada were ranked as the second and third cleanest cities, respectively, with a population over 1 million.
  • Varanasi was ranked the cleanest under the ‘Ganga town’ category. Among smaller cities with population between 1-10 lakh, New Delhi ranked first followed by Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

  • A group of Cuban musicians, including one imprisoned in Cuba, won song of the year at the Latin Grammy awards for their song “Patria y Vida” — garnering even more international attention for a song that’s become an anthem for Cuba’s opposition.
  • Banned in Cuba, “Patria y Vida” is a song that transcends politics and culture. The title is symbolic and full of meaning for those who oppose the Communist government.
  • During the July 11 historic anti-government protests that swept through the island people could be heard shouting “Patria y Vida” and some wrote the words on signs.

Martin Guptill surpasses ViratKohli to become highest run getter in T20 internationals

  • New Zealand opener Martin Guptill surpassed Indian star ViratKohli to become the leading run-getter in T20Is.
  • Guptill surpassed Kohli during the second T20I of the three-match series. Guptill has 3248 runs to his name compared to Kohli’s 3227.
  • Guptill averages a little over 30 while Kohli is way ahead of him on that front with an average of 52. Rohit Sharma is third in the leading run-getters’ standings with more than 3000 runs.

AB de Villiers retires from all forms of cricket

  • South African legend AB de Villiers announced his retirement from all forms of the game, which he dominated for 17 years with his 360 degree batting.
  • The 37-year-old versatile cricketer’s decision has effectively ended his association with his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.
  • He made the announcement, ending an illustrious career, which saw him play in 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20Is for the Proteas.
  • The former South Africa captain and batting mainstay had retired from international cricket in 2018.

Kamala Harris becomes first woman to get US Presidential powers

  • Harris is the first woman to serve as vice president of the United States; no woman has ever been president in the country’s nearly 250-year history.
  • Presidential power has been transferred to the vice president before, when President George W. Bush had colonoscopies in 2002 and 2007.
