Karnataka government to grant title deeds to slum dwellers

  • Karnataka State government has decided to grant title deeds to over 16 lakh slum-dwellers in urban local body (ULB) areas, including in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.
  • This decision assumes importance in the light of the forthcoming elections to the BBMP. In the BBMP limits alone, there are over 50,000 families that have been residing in 239 slums, spread over 683 acres.
  • The decision to provide title deeds was taken after holding discussions with officials of the Revenue, the Urban Development, and the Municipal Administration departments.

Amazon under threat from forest fires

  • Fires in the Brazilian Amazon have surged so far in August, outstripping the same period of 2019 and renewing concerns about the forest's destruction.
  • The number of fires in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest jumped 28% in July from a year ago, as some environmentalists warned a jump this week could signal a repeat of last year’s surging destruction of the world’s largest rainforest.
  • Deforestation hit an 11-year high in 2019 and has soared a further 25% in the first half of 2020.
  • In addition to harvesting timber, many trees in the Amazon are cleared to plant soy or make way for lucrative cattle pastures. Burning is commonly used to clear trees quickly.

Goa governor Satya Pal Malik transferred to Meghalaya

  • Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik has been moved to Meghalaya, his third move in two years, and Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been given additional charge of Goa.
  • Satya Pal Malik was appointed Goa governor in October last year. He was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir when its special status under Article 370 was scrapped and it was divided into two union territories.
  • Satya Pal Malik has been appointed on the place of Tathagata Roy who completed his five-year tenure in Tripura-Meghalaya. Roy has completed his five-year tenure by serving as governor of Tripura for three years and the remaining in Meghalaya.

Ministers seek second state capital for Tamil Nadu

  • State tourism minister Vellamandi Natarajan, from Trichy sought that his native be made the second capital. The demands set off a debate on the second capital and demands started coming from other parts of the state too.
  • However Chief Minister E Palanisami chose not to delve deep into the subject and sought to put an end to the demands making it clear that the government has no idea to create a second capital.
  • The Tamil Nadu government is in no hurry to make a decision on these demands and the Ministers are expressing their views keeping in mind the local sentiments ahead of the 2021 assembly elections.

Indore ranked cleanest city 4th year in row

  • Indore was adjudged India's cleanest city for a fourth straight year while Surat and Navi Mumbai grabbed the second and third positions respectively, as the Centre announced the results of its latest annual cleanliness survey on.
  • Varanasi was adjudged the 'Best Ganga Town' in the country, followed by Kanpur, Munger, Prayagraj, and Haridwar.
  • Chhattisgarh was given the 'Cleanest State' award in the category of states having more than 100 urban local bodies, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
  • The survey brochure describes the New Delhi Municipal Council as “India's Cleanest National Capital (National or State Capitals/UT)”.
  • Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh has been ranked the cleanest city in the category of 1-10 lakh population, followed by Mysore in Karnataka and New Delhi Municipal area.
  • The Jalandhar Cantonment Board had been ranked first while Delhi Cantonment Board and Meerut Cantonment Board have grabbed second and third positions respectively.
