Former IAS officer AK Sharma appointed Vice President of UP BJP

  • Arvind Kumar Sharma, who had taken voluntary retirement and joined the BJP, was appointed a vice-president of the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit.
  • The announcement has an end to months of speculation that Mr Sharma could be handed a plum post in the cabinet of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls.
  • Mr. Sharma was elected an MLC after joining the party and was given the new responsibility by BJP state president Swatantra Dev Singh.
  • Sharma is a 1988 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre and had closely worked with Narendra Modi, both in the Chief Minister's Office (Gujarat) and Prime Minister's Office in Delhi for almost two decades.

Australia accused of becoming secretive democracy

  • Australian government has been accused that it has become one of the world’s most secretive democracies by restricting free and open media
  • Recently, a former Australian spy was convicted over his unconfirmed role as a whistle-blower who revealed an espionage operation against the government of East Timor.
  • It’s the latest high-profile case in a national system in which secrecy laws, some dating back to the colonial era, are routinely used to suppress information.
  • Police have also threatened to charge journalists who exposed war crime allegations against Australian special forces in Afghanistan, or bureaucrats’ plan to allow an intelligence agency to spy on Australian citizens.

India abstains from voting in UNGA resolution against Myanmar

  • India has abstained from voting on United Nations General Assembly resolution, that criticised Myanmar for the five-month-old military takeover.
  • The draft resolution ‘The situation in Myanmar’ was adopted with 119 member statesvoting in favour, while 36 nations abstained and so did Russia. Belarus was the only country voting against it.
  • The resolution expressed “grave concern” at the February 1 coup and called upon Myanmar’s military junta to immediately and unconditionally release political prisoners.

International Yoga Day

  • International Yoga Day is observed annually on June 21. The idea behind the day is to create awareness about yoga and its many benefits.
  • The idea of an International Yoga Day was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 in the United Nations General Assembly Meeting.
  • Yoga is an ancient meditative technique that cleanses, heals and harmonises the body from the core. It is a practice that is widely accepted even in Western cultures.

Ebrahim Raisi set to be President of Iran

  • Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline cleric close to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has won Iran's presidential election.
  • He is the country's top judge, and has ultra-conservative political views. Many Iranians and human rights activists have pointed to his alleged role in the mass executions of political prisoners in the 1980s.
  • President-elect Raisi will officially take office in 45 days, at which point he will become Iran's eighth president. Until that time, Hassan Rouhani will remain acting president of Iran.
