China completes Tibet highway

  • China has completed construction of a strategically significant highway through the world’s deepest canyon in Tibet along the Brahmaputra river.
  • The highway will allow greater access to remote areas in Medog county along the disputed border with Arunachal Pradesh in India.
  • The highway took seven years to complete. It will reduce the distance between Nyingchi city and Medog from 346 km to 180 km and will cut the travel time by eight hours.

World’s largest iceberg breaks off from Antarctica

  • A giant slab of ice bigger than the Spanish island of Majorca has separated off from the frozen edge of Antarctica into the Weddell Sea, becoming the largest iceberg afloat in the world.
  • The newly calved berg has been designated as A-76 by scientists and was spotted in recent satellite images captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission.
  • The A-76 broke away from Antarctica’s Ronne Ice Shelf and is considered the largest existing iceberg on the planet, surpassing the now second-placedA-23A.

Pinarayi Vijayan sworn in as the chief minister of Kerala

  • The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government led by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan was sworn in at the Central Stadium by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.
  • Vijayan is the first Chief Minister in Kerala to get a second consecutive mandate. There are 17 new faces in the 21-member cabinet. The Cabinet has three women members now.
  • Vijayan had dropped all CPI(M) ministers from his previous regime. The Congress had opposed the event citing Covid restrictions.

Indian and European refiners get ready to buy Iranian oil

  • Indian refiners and at least one European refiner are re-evaluating their crude purchases to make room for Iranian oil, anticipating that U.S. sanctions will be lifted.
  • Former U.S. President Trump abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on Tehran in late 2018.
  • Europe and Turkey had consumed up to 5,00,000 barrels per day of Iranian oil. India was Iran’s second largest buyer after China.
  • India is the world’s third largest oil consumer and importer. It had halted imports from Tehran in 2019 after a temporary waiver granted to some countries expired.
  • U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration and Iran have engaged in indirect talks to revive the pact for Tehran to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.

INS Rajput to be decommissioned

  • INS Rajput, the first destroyer of the Indian Navy, will be decommissioned today after over 41 years of service. The lead ship of the Kashin-class destroyer was commissioned on May 4, 1980.
  • INS Rajput was constructed in the 61 Communards Shipyard in Nikolaevunder her original Russian name ‘Nadezhny’ meaning ‘Hope’.
  • Over her four decades of glorious service to the nation, the ship has the distinction of serving in both western and eastern fleets.
  • Some of her missions included Operation Pawan for patrolling duties off the coast of Sri Lanka, Operation Cactus to resolve hostage situation off the Maldives, and Operation Crowsnest off Lakshadweep.
