Chinese hackers use VPN flaw to attack US Defense industry

  • China-linked hackers have been using a previously undisclosed vulnerability in American virtual private networking devices to spy on the U.S. Defense industry.
  • U.S. officials have repeatedly accused Chinese hackers of stealing American military secrets over the years through various means.
  • Lately networking devices have emerged as a favoured avenue for digital spies. Beijing-aligned hackers were targeting devices manufactured by Citrix Systems Inc and Cisco Systems Inc to break into a host of companies.

EU reaches major climate deal

  • The European Union has reached a tentative climate deal that should make the 27-nation bloc climate-neutral by 2050.
  • Under the provisional deal reached, the EU also commits itself on an intermediate target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
  • The United States, the world's second-biggest polluter after China, is preparing to announce its new target for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
  • The deal still needs to be officially approved by the member states and the legislature before officially being accepted.

  • Air pollution costs Indian business about 95 billion dollars every fiscal year, around 3 per cent of India's total GDP, according to a research.
  • The cost is equal to 50 per cent of all tax collected annually or 150 per cent of India's healthcare budget.
  • India's workers take 1.3 billion days off work annually because of the adverse effects of air pollution on their health, amounting to 6 billion dollars in lost revenue.
  • Air pollution has also been shown to have significant effects on workers' cognitive and physical performance, decreasing business revenues by up to 24 billion dollars.
  • The report found that lower air quality also reduces consumers' willingness to venture out of their homes, leading to lower footfall and ultimately 22 billion dollars less revenue for consumer-facing businesses.
  • The report further shows that India's IT sector is disproportionately affected, losing 1.3 billion dollars due to pollution-induced productivity loss per year.

Hockey statistician BG Joshi passes away

Scientists discover plant eating dinosaur remains in Chile

  • Scientists studying Chile's parched Atacama desert have discovered the remains of a previously unknown species of dinosaur that millions of years ago lived in the area.
  • A team led by Chilean geologist Carlos Arévalo unearthed the remains of Arackarlicanantay, south of the desert city ??of Copiapó.
  • Recent paleontological studies suggest Arackar lived amid flowering plants, ferns and palm trees during the Cretaceous period 66-80 million years ago.
  • The discovery of a titanosaur on the west side of South America's Andes Mountains is rare, though several species have been found in Argentina and Brazil, further east.
