Indian American Sudarsanam Babu appointed to US National Science Board

  • US President Donald Trump has appointed Indian-American Sudarsanam Babu to country’s top science board.
  • Babu, who is from the prestigious Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been appointed as a member of the National Science Board for a six-year term.
  • Babu would be the third Indian American in this prestigious board. The other two being Sethuraman Panchanathan from the Arizona State University and Suresh V Garimella from University of Vermont.

Lasith Malinga named greatest bowler in IPL history

  • Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been named the greatest bowler in Indian Premier League (IPL) history by Star Sports experts team, which included cricketers, statisticians, umpires etc.
  • Malinga was picked ahead of bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Sunil Narine and others. He is the leading wicket-taker in the league with 170 wickets from 122 matches.
  • Malinga registered his best bowling figures against Delhi franchise in IPL 2011 when he took five wickets for 13 runs in 3.4 overs he bowled.

BMW India CEO Rudratej Singh passes away

  • BMW Group President and CEO Rudratej Singh passed away due to a massive cardiac arrest, sources said.
  • The German auto major had appointed Mr. Singh as the head of India operations from August 1, 2019. He was the first Indian in that position.
  • Mr. Singh had more than 25 years of experience and held multiple leadership positions both in the automotive and non-automotive industry. Mr. Singh was the Global President at Royal Enfield, in his previous assignment.

Gene Deitch, creator of Tom and Jerry Cartoon dies

  • Gene Deitch, one the directors behind one of world’s most popular cartoons, Tom and Jerry, died in Prague. He was 95.
  • Deitch was known for directing some of the most popular animator cartoons, including Popeye the Sailor Man, Munro, Tom Terrific and Nudnik.
  • He had directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry and multiple episodes of the Popeye the Sailor series.
  • Deitch's won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960 for his film Munro. He also received nominations for the same category twice in 1964 for Here's Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship.

Vijay Mallya loses extradition case

  • Business tycoon Vijay Mallya lost his High Court appeal in London against a 2018 decision to extradite him to India to face fraud charges resulting from the collapse of his defunct company Kingfisher Airlines. The case will now go to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel for a final call.
  • The dismissal effectively clears the way for Vijay Mallya's extradition to India to face the charges in the Indian courts, with 14 days for him to apply for permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court.
  • If he does apply, the UK Home Office would wait for the outcome of that appeal. But if he does not, under the India-UK Extradition Treaty, it would then be expected to formally certify the court order for Mallya to be extradited to India within 28 days.
