World Happiness Report

  • India continued to fare poorly in the world happiness index, with its position marginally improving to 136 as against last year’s 139.
  • Afghanistan was named the most unhappy country in the world, ranking last on the index of 146 countries.
  • Nepal (84), Bangladesh (94), Pakistan (121) and Sri Lanka (127) managed to get better ranks in the list.
  • Finland topped the list for the fifth time in a row, according to the 10th edition of the World Happiness Report.

Lakshya Sen loses All England Badminton championship final

  • The world number one Viktor Axelsen defeated India's Lakshya Sen to win the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships.
  • Sen was bidding to become only the third man after Prakash Padukone (1980) and PullelaGopichand (2001) to win the All England Open Badminton Championships.
  • The women’s doubles pair of GayatriGopichand and Treesa Jolly bowed out in the semifinals following their 17-21, 16-21 defeat to Shu Xiang Zhang and You Zheng of China.

Narasinghapettai nagaswaram gets GI tag

  • The Narasinghapettai nagaswaram, a classical wind music instrument traditionally made by artisans based at a village near Kumbakonam, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • A major portion of the ‘Narasinghapettai nagaswaram’ is made from the aacha (Hardwickiabinata) tree and many a time the artisans use the wood from parts of old houses.
  • The artisans use drilling machines, besides carpentry tools, to make the nagaswarams that are played widely in functions like weddings and temple festivals.

Oil imports from US to rise

  • India’s oil Imports from the US set to increase by 11% even after India purchased crude oil from Russia amidst the war crisis.
  • With an overall increase of 11% as compared to last year, the US will now supply 8% of India’s total imports in crude oil.
  • India’s oil imports are majorly directed by Iraq which supplies 23% of our oil needs, followed by Saudi Arabia at 18% and the UAE by 11%.

Hyderabad FC wins ISL

  • Hyderabad FC won their first Indian Super League title, defeating Kerala Blasters in a penalty shootout victory in the final at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa.
  • While Hyderabad won the trophy in their first final appearance, this is Blasters’ third defeat in an ISL final and their second in a shootout.
  • Kerala Blasters goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill won the Golden Glove Award while Hyderabad FC's Bartholomew Ogbeche wins ISL 2021-22 Golden Boot.
