  • The United Nations has declared Finland as the world’s happiest nation for the third consecutive year.
  • Researchers for the World Happiness Report asked people in 153 countries to evaluate their levels of happiness by taking into account factors such as GDP, social support, personal freedom, and levels of corruption in each nation.
  • India is ranked 144, way lower than its neighbours. Nepal is ranked 15, Pakistan is at the 29, Bangladesh at 107 and Sri Lanka at 130.

FIR against singer Kanika Kapoor

  • Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor who has been tested positive for coronavirus, has been booked by Uttar Pradesh Police for negligence for staying at Taj Hotel and attending several functions in Lucknow.
  • Kapoor has been booked under Sections 188, 269, and 270 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The FIR was lodged based on a complaint filed by the chief medical officer (CMO) of Lucknow.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government, meanwhile, has ordered an inquiry over the social gatherings attended by the singer during the last one week since her arrival in the state capital.

Olympic flame lands in Japan

  • The Olympic flame arrived in Japan from Greece in a scaled-down ceremony at an air base in northern Japan.
  • The flame, carried in a burning canister, touched down amid growing doubts if the Tokyo Games can open as scheduled on July 24 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Organizers and the International Olympic Committee say it will, but postponement or cancellation is viewed increasingly as a possible option

Maldives pledges $200,000 for SAARC emergency fund

  • Maldives has pledged $200,000 contribution to the SAARC Corona Emergency Fund proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an initial offer of $10 million from India to help combat the fast-spreading coronavirus pandemic in the region.
  • Nepal and Bhutan pledged nearly $1 million and $100,000 respectively to the SAARC Corona Emergency Fund.
  • Founded in 1985, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is a regional intergovernmental organisation and geopolitical union of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Legendary former footballer PK Banerjee dies

  • Legendary India footballer PK Banerjee died in Kolkata after battling a prolonged illness. He was 83.
  • Besides winning the gold medal at the Jakarta Asian Games in 1992, Banerjee led India in the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he scored the equalizer against a formidable French team in a 1-1 draw.
  • Before that, Banerjee represented India in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and played a key role in their 4-2 win over Australia in the quarterfinals.
