Gauri Sawant becomes first transgender election ambassadors in India to be appointed by Election Commission of India (ECI).
She is one of the 12 election ambassadors from Maharashtra appointed by ECI for 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
In her new role, she will help in more people from transgender community to get registered during final phase of voter’s enrollment. She will visit every transgender and inspire them about need for voting.
Following Supreme Court verdict, transgenders got right to vote for first time in 2014. Earlier in 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections there was no record of transgender voters.
In 2014, 918 voters were registered in this third category and number of transgender has doubled in five years to 2,086 at present.
