Grammy winner Meat Loaf passes away

  • Meat Loaf, the singer and actor whose “Bat Out of Hell” album became one of the best-selling of all time, has died at the age of 74.
  • The album Bat Out Of Hell was one of the best selling albums of all time. Meat Loaf won a 1994 Grammy Award for the song “I’d Do Anything For Love.”
  • Meat Loaf also appeared in over 65 movies, with iconic roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club, among others.

Amar JawanJyoti to be merged with National war memorial flame

  • The Amar JawanJyoti, the eternal flame that has been burning at India Gate for 50 years in the memory of soldiers who died in the India-Pakistan War of 1971, will be merged with the flame at Delhi’s National War Memorial.
  • The National War Memorial, which was inaugurated in 2019, pays tribute to all soldiers who lost their lives in various armed conflicts in Independent India.
  • The Amar JawanJyoti was inaugurated by late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1972 as a tribute to martyrs of the 1971 war.

French actor Gaspard Ulliel passes away

  • Gaspard Ulliel, one of the most celebrated actors of French cinema and a star of Marvel’s upcoming ‘Moon Knight’ series, passed away following a ski accident. He was 37.
  • Ulliel was cast as Midnight Man in ‘Moon Knight’, but he’s best remembered for his part in Xavier Dolan’s Canadian-French film ‘It’s Only the End of The World’ (2016), alongside Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel.
  • Ulliel also delivered a powerful performance as the famous French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in Bertrand Bonello’s biopic ‘Saint Laurent’.

Yemen loses internet connection after Saudi airstrikes

  • Yemen has lost its connection to the internet after Saudi-led airstrikes targeted a site in the contested city of Hodeida.
  • The disruption affected TeleYemen, the state-owned monopoly that controls internet access in the country. TeleYemen is now run by the Houthi rebels who have held Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, since late 2014.
  • The undersea FALCON cable carries internet into Yemen through the Hodeida port along the Red Sea for TeleYemen. The FALCON cable has another landing in eastern port of Ghaydah, but the majority of Yemen’s population lives in its west along the Red Sea.

Russia and China block UN sanctions on North Korea

  • Russia and China moved to block the Biden administration’s bid to impose sanctions on North Koreans as the regime threatened to conduct nuclear weapons tests.
  • North Korea conducted successive ballistic missile tests including what it called a hypersonic missile test starting from January 5.
  • The US had imposed sanctions against five North Koreans last week for their alleged role in the country’s missile programme.
