Virat Kohli named PETA India’s 2019 person of the year

  • Virat Kohli, the captain of Indian cricket team, has been named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s Person of the Year for 2019.
  • Kohli’s efforts to improve conditions for animals includes sending a letter on PETA India’s behalf to officials calling for the release of the elephant Malti.
  • He supported PETA India’s call for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to be updated for stronger penalties to animal abusers.

Saturn’s moon titan mapped for the first time

  • Scientists have unveiled the first global geological map of Saturn's moon Titan including vast plains and dunes of frozen organic material and lakes of liquid methane.
  • The map was based on radar, infrared and other data collected by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which studied Saturn and its moons from 2004 to 2017.
  • Titan, with a diameter of 3,200 miles (5,150 km), is the Solar System's second-biggest moon behind Jupiter's Ganymede. It is larger than the planet Mercury.

Reliance industryjoins elite group of oil companies

  • Reliance Industries Ltd, run by Mukesh Ambani, has eclipsed BP Plc to break into an elite club of energy supermajors.
  • Reliance’s shares have increased at three times the pace of India’s benchmark index this year after Ambani announced plans to cut the company’s net debt to zero in 18 months.
  • It is also narrowing the gap with PetroChina Co., currently Asia’s biggest oil firm by value, and is on the verge of becoming the first Indian company to hit the 10 trillion rupee market-cap milestone.

Kochi gets a biodiversity map

  • A natural assets map that highlights Kochi’s biodiversity, detailing species of plants, animals, insects, and natural features has been prepared.
  • This has made Kochi the first Indian city to have such a map.
  • The mapping was taken up by the Kochi Corporation’s Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development and ICLEI-South Asia as part of a German-funded project, Integrated Subnational Action for Biodiversity (Interact-Bio), being implemented in India, Brazil and Tanzania.
  • The four-year project launched in 2017 is targeted at implementing biodiversity strategies and action plans in three Indian cities – Kochi, Mangaluru and Panaji.

Gujarat bans selling of junk foods near schools

  • The Gujarat government is in the process of banning sale of junk food in schools as well as in the 50-meter area around them to encourage consumption of healthy food among children.
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recommended a ban on sale of food high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) in schools and the state government is in the process of framing draft rules for the same.
  • The draft rules will be circulated among stake-holders like schools, food business operators and others and their opinion will be sought before implementing the ban.
