Qantas tests world’s longest flight

  • Australia's flag carrier Qantas has completeda nonstop test flight from New York to Sydney.
  • It plans to research how the world's longest potential commercial airplane journey of nearly 20 hours would impact pilots, crew and passengers.
  • Qantas has announced three long-haul flights as part of its Project Sunrise that aims to fulfil its goal of running non-stop commercial flights on a regular basis from the east coast of Australia to London and New York.

China’s GDP sinks to lowest in 27 years

  • China's economy grew at the slowest rate in 27 years in the third quarter according to official figures.
  • Gross domestic product (GDP) figures showed that Chinese economy expanded 6% in July-September compared to 6.2% in 2nd quarter. It marks the worst quarterly figure since 1992.
  • Chinese trade has suffered from US tariff hikes , in a fight over Beijing’s surplus trade and technology plans in America.

Enzyme that prevents Streptococci infection

  • Researchers have found an enzyme that could prevent a deadly streptococci infection that causes large number of deaths worldwide.
  • Group A Streptococcus can lead to illnesses such as strep throat, scarlet fever, sepsis, and toxic shock syndrome as well as several long-term autoimmune diseases with high mortality rates.
  • Researchers found an enzyme that is required to produce a carbohydrate on the surface of the streptococcal bacterium which enables it to infect humans and animals. Stopping the enzyme could lead to stopping the infection and subsequently the disease.

Karnataka tops India Innovation Index

  • NITI Aayog has launched first ever India Innovation Index aimed at examining the innovation capabilities and performance of Indian. Karnataka has topped the list in states, Delhi in Unionterritories and Sikkim in hill states.
  • The index measures innovation inputs through five enabler parameters and innovation output through two performance parameters.
  • Human capital, investment, knowledge workers, business environment, safety and legal environment have been identified as enabler parameters, whereas knowledge output and knowledge diffusion have been selected as performance parameters.

World’s 1st AI university in UAE

  • The UAE has set up an artificial intelligence university in Abu Dhabi, claimed to be 1st in the world.
  • The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) was inaugurated on October 17 and it offers courses for undergraduate students.
  • The university has been set up with an aim of introducing a new model of academia and research to the field of artificial intelligence, which is emerging as the future of technology solutions.
