Former footballer Jimmy Greaves passes away

  • Jimmy Greaves, one of England’s most prolific strikers and Tottenham Hotspur’s record goal scorer, has died at the age of 81.
  • Greaves scored 266 goals for Tottenham between 1961-1970 and his 37 league goals in the 1962-63 season remains a club record.
  • He began his career with Chelsea and netted 124 league goals for the London club between 1957 and 1961.
  • He played in England’s three group games at the 1966 World Cup before getting injured.He was replaced in the team by Geoff Hurst.

  • The 73rd Emmy Awards took place at the Event Deck at LA Live, an indoor-outdoor venue. The Crown, which had multiple nominations, won in all major categories.
  • It won prizes for Best Drama series, best actors (drama) and best actors in supporting roles. It also took awards for best writing and directing.
  • Olivia Colman won Best Actress and Josh O’Connor won Best Actor for the Netflix series. Ted Lasso won Best Comedy Series.
  • In the comedy department, the beloved Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso and the acclaimed HBO Max series Hacks shared the wins.

Cars24 raises $450 million in funding

  • CARS24, India’s leading e-commerce platform for pre-owned vehicles, has closed a $450 million round of funding, including a $340 million Series F equity round alongside $110 million debt from diversified financial institutions.
  • The Series F equity round was led by DST Global, Falcon Edge and SoftBank Vision Fund 2 along with participation from Tencent and existing investors Moore Strategic Ventures and Exor Seeds.
  • With the latest investment, CARS24 plans to expand its global presence as well as further build its cars, bikes and financing business in India, while continuing to invest in technology that delivers the best customer experience possible.

ViratKohli to step down as captain of RCB

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore announced that ViratKohli will step down as RCB captain after the end of Indian Premier League 2021 season.
  • Kohli has been with RCB since the inception of IPL in 2008. He was appointed captain in 2011, but has been unable to win the trophy for the franchise.
  • Under him, RCB’s best show came in 2016 when the team reached the final, with Kohli leading from the front scoring 973 runs including four centuries. It is the most runs by any player in a single edition of the IPL.

Charanjit Singh Channi takes oath as Punjab CM

  • Congress leader and MLA Charanjit Singh Channi on September 20 took oath as Chief Minister of Punjab. Two Deputy Chief Ministers — O.P. Soni and Sukhjinder Randhawa — also took oath along with the Chief Minister.
  • Punjab Governor BanwarilalPurohit administered the oath of office and secrecy. Chief minister Amarinder Singh had recently resigned from office.
  • Mr. Channi is the first Dalit to head the government in the State. He was Technical Education Minister in the Amarinder Singh Cabinet.
