NASA orbiter captures photos of Chandrayaan-2 lander's landing site

  • The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images, captured photographs of Vikram’s attempted landing site near the moon’s uncharted south pole during its flyby.
  • The lander Vikram was supposed to make a soft landing on the moon’s surface where it would have performed a series of experiments.
  • The time period for establishing a connection with lander is fading away due to approaching lunar night, that can reduce temperature significantly and render the instruments aboard the lander useless.

Asia’s first Rugby world cup in Japan

Government proposes to cut corporate taxes

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced big cuts in corporate tax rate, giving a ?1.45 lakh crore stimulus aimed at reviving private investment and lifting growth.
  • The government also rolled back enhanced surcharge, announced in this year's Budget, on capital gains arising on sale of equity share in a company or a unit of an equity oriented mutual fund in the hands of an individual.

Amit Panghal becomes first Indian to enter finals of World Boxing Championship

  • Asian champion Amit Panghal (52kg) became the first Indian to enter the finals of the World Men’s Boxing Championship while Manish Kaushik (63kg) signed off with a bronze medal after going loosing in the semi-finals in Ekaterinburg.
  • Before this, India had never won more than one bronze medal in a single edition of the world championships but Panghal and Kaushik changed that by making the semi-finals.
