Tripura promotes commercial cultivation of agar

  • Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has sought Prime Minister’s intervention to facilitate export of Agar oil and Agar chips to abroad.
  • Tripura expects to export 75,000 kg of Agar chips and 1,500 kg of Agar oil in the current financial year. The state has over 50 lakh trees are available in the state.
  • Tripura government has come up with Tripura Agar Wood Policy 2021’, which proposed to double agar wood plantation by 2025. The state had a potential of agar trade of ? 2000 crore.
  • Under the policy, testing laboratories and trade centres would be set up and new technology for artificial inoculation would be introduced,.
  • Tripura has initiated steps to promote commercial cultivation of Agar. Agar is used in perfumeries and other industries.

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi appointed Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi as Deputy Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha.
  • Naqvi succeeds Piyush Goyal, who has been named Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha. The minority affairs minister is known for his knowledge of parliamentary affairs, and has served as minister of state for parliamentary affairs during the first term of the Modi government.
  • Naqvi hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur and was elected to the Upper House from Jharkhand. He was MoS for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Private boards for Vedic studies to be set up

  • An autonomous body under the Education Ministry is planning to set up two private school Boards for Vedic studies blended with modern subjects.
  • The Centre currently has only two school boards — the Central Board of Secondary Education and the National Institute of Open Schooling.
  • Maharshi Sandipani Rashtriya Ved Vidya Pratisthan (MSRVVP), Ujjain, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, has given permission for a private Board for blended education, including both vedic studies and modern subjects.

Pedro Castillo named Peru president elect

  • Rural teacher-turned-politician Pedro Castillo has been named Peru’s president-elect, six weeks after a polarising vote in which his right-wing rival, Keiko Fujimori, alleged electoral fraud.
  • The new president had not held political office before, he had developed a reputation as a good negotiator as a trade union leader.
  • Castillo is the head of Marxist party and his rise may result in an overhaul of Peru’s market economy, which has relied on global trade to power one of Latin America’s fastest-growing economies during the past two decades.

Vaidehi Dongre crowned Miss India US

  • Twenty-five-year-old Vaidehi Dongre from Michigan was crowned Miss India USA 2021 while Arshi Lalani from Georgia was declared the first runner up.
  • As many as 61 contestants from 30 states participated in three different pageants – Miss India USA, Mrs India USA and Miss Teen India USA. Winners of all three categories get complimentary tickets to travel to Mumbai to take part in worldwide pageants.
  • Started by New York-based eminent Indian-Americans Dharmatma and Neelam Saran under the banner of Worldwide Pageants around 40 years ago, Miss India USA is the longest-running Indian pageant outside India.
