Krishna-Godavari fault line may trigger Earthquakes and Tsunamis

  • Researchers at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) have found a major fault line along the coast in the Krishna-Godavari basin in Andhra Pradesh and predicted that it could trigger earthquakes and tsunamis in the future.
  • The researchers said the fault was once active and it may become active again. This poses a major earthquake threat to the north coastal region of the state, particularly the port city of Visakhapatnam.
  • They said the fracture line may possibly become active again in the future and turn out to be a major coastal hazardous event associated with seismicity and tsunami in and around the Visakhapatnam region.

Unique fungal infection causing death in Covid-19 patients

  • A team of researchers has for the first time discovered hybrid fungus involved in lung infections and are investigating the role of fungi in COVID-19.
  • Aspergilla’s latus, a species of fungus previously found only in soil or plants, has been found for the first time in a hospital environment by an international group of researchers.
  • The group sequenced its genome and discovered that it is actually a hybrid and is up to three times more drug-resistant than the two species from which it derives.

India’s case fatality rises to 2.5%

  • India’s Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has fallen below 2.5% for the first time, according to a statement issued by the Union Health Ministry.
  • The Ministry attributes this reduction to the focused efforts of the Centre and State/UT governments on efficient clinical management of hospitalised cases.
  • As per data issued by the Ministry, currently, there are 29 States and UTs with CFR lower than the India average. Five States and UTs have a CFR of zero; 14 States and UTs have a CFR of less than 1%.

UAE’s Hope mission launched

  • The United Arab Emirates successfully launched its Mars-bound Hope Probe, marking the Arab world's first interplanetary mission.
  • The Hope Probe took off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan, after a delay last week due to bad weather. The probe has established two-way communication with the ground segment in Dubai.
  • The Al Amal probe, as it is called in Arabic, is expected to reach Mars by February 2021. It will be the first time the UAE has orbited Mars, and the probe will stay in orbit for a Martian year equivalent to 687 days on Earth -- to gather data about Mars' atmosphere.
