Female referees to officiate for the first time in Men’s FIFA World Cup Qatar

  • Female referees will make World Cup history this year by working games at a major men’s tournament for the first time in Qatar.
  • Three female referees and three female assistant referees were announced on May 19 by FIFA among 129 officials selected for World Cup duty.
  • This concludes a long process that began several years ago with the deployment of female referees at FIFA men`s junior and senior tournaments.

Canada bans Huawei from 5G networks

  • Wireless carriers in Canada won’t be allowed to install Huawei equipment in their high-speed 5G networks, the Canadian government announced.
  • Canada had been the only member of the Five Eyes intelligence-pooling alliance not to bar or restrict use of equipment from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.
  • Canada’s ban also includes ZTE Corp., one of China’s biggest tech companies and one that is state-owned.

Gaganyaan mission delayed beyond 2022

  • Indian Space and Research Organization (ISRO) has announced that Gaganyaan mission will be further delayed.
  • Gaganyaan was planned to be launched this year to mark India’s 75th year of independence. However, it faced several setbacks.
  • During the test mission, the spacecraft will be launched to an altitude of 15 kilometers during which Isro will simulate an abort scenario after which the crew capsule will return to Earth under parachutes.

Indonesia to lift palm oil export ban

  • Indonesia, the world’s biggest supplier of palm oil, said it will lift a ban on exports, likely helping India and other importers.
  • India annually imports around 13-13.5 million tonne of edible oils, of which around 8-8.5 million tonnes (around 63 per cent) is palm oil.
  • Of this, 8-8.5 million tonnes of palm oil, 45-50 per cent comes from Indonesia and the rest from neighboring Malaysia.

Nikhat Zareen wins gold in World Boxing Championship

  • Nikhat Zareen of Telangana won the prestigious gold medal at Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul.
  • Nikhat Zareen beat Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the 52kg flyweight category at the Women’s World Boxing Championships held at Istanbul, Turkey.
  • The former junior world champion is the fifth Indian woman boxer after MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha KC to win a gold at the world championships.
