Iran starts enriching Uranium to 60%

  • Iran began enriching uranium to its highest-ever purity, edging close to weapons-grade levels, in order to pressure negotiators in Vienna.
  • The move has been criticised from U.S. President Joe Biden, who noted that negotiations were continuing anyway.
  • Currently, only a few grams an hour of uranium gas would be enriched up to 60 per cent purity far lower than what the country had been able to produce.
  • The narrow scope of the new enrichment provides Iran with a way to quickly de-escalate if it choses.

Vaccine opened for all citizens above 18 years

  • The vaccination drive will be opened up for all citizens above the age of 18 from May 1. The immunisation drive was currently restricted to only citizens aged above 45.
  • Vaccine manufacturers empowered to release up to 50 percent of their supply to state governments and in the open market at a pre-declared price.
  • Manufacturers would transparently make an advance declaration of the price for 50 percent supply that would be available to state governments and in open market, before May 1, 2021.

Jose Mourinho sacked as manager of Tottenham Hotspur

  • Tottenham Hotspur has sacked manager Jose Mourinho.  His coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin, and Giovanni Cerra have also been sacked.
  • Mourinho's sacking has come just six days before his side was set to face off against Manchester City in the EFL Cup final.
  • Under Mourinho's leadership, Tottenham have struggled in the ongoing season, currently lying in 7th place in the Premier League table.
  • Spurs also crashed out of the Europa League, following a shocking 3-0 defeat in the 2nd leg against Dinamo Zagreb, despite having a two-goal advantage in the first leg.

UK PM Boris Johnson cancels India visit

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has cancelled a planned trip to India, due to the current coronavirus situation in India.
  • The two sides will be holding a virtual meeting in the coming days to launch plans for a transformed India-UK relationship.
  • Prime Ministers Modi and Johnson will speak later this month to agree and launch their ambitious plans for the future partnership between the UK and India.
  • Relations with India are seen as a key component of both Britain's post-Brexit ambitions to reinvigorate trade with countries outside the European Union.

India retains its position in Press Freedom Index

  • India has retained its position in the World Press Freedom Index 2021 published by the international journalism not-for profit body, Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
  • The report says that India continues to be counted among the countries classified “bad” for journalism and is termed as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists trying to do their jobs properly.
  • The latest index ranks 180 countries, topped by Norway followed by Finland and Denmark, while Eritrea is at the bottom. China is ranked 177, and is only above North Korea at 179 and Turkmenistan at 178.
  • India is ranked 142, same as last year. In the South Asian neighbourhood, Nepal is at 106, Sri Lanka at 127, Myanmar (before the coup) at 140, Pakistan at 145 and Bangladesh at 152.
