IDSA renamed in honour of Manohar Parrikar

  • The government has decided to rename national security think tank Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) after former defence minister Manohar Parrikar.
  • The IDSA is an autonomous body established in 1965 to conduct research on national and international security and is funded by the defence ministry, with the minister chairing its executive committee. 
  • Parrikar's tenure witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced the country's security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen.

Haji Ali dargah listed in world book of records

  • Mumbai’s Haji Ali Dargah has been listed in the World Book of Records as one of the most visited shrines.
  • The 552-year-old dargah which boasts of Indo-Islamic architecture is not only a popular religious site but also a tourist attraction.
  • The World Book of Records has many such listings. Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Vadodara and Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain have been listed among the most visited temples and Nepal’s Pashupatinath Temple for being the oldest temple with mythological significance among others.

Nritya Gopal Das elected president of Ram Mandir Trust

  • The Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust, set up to oversee the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, has elected Ramjanmabhoomi Nyas’s Mahant Nritya Gopal Das as chairman.
  • Champat Rai, described as a social activist and also associated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad was elected as general secretary.
  • The meeting also decided that Nripendra Mishra, former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will head a committee to take decisions regarding the actual construction of the temple.

Sri Srinivasan becomes first Indian-American to lead federal Circuit court

  • Sri Srinivasan, a prominent Indian-American judge, has created history by becoming the first person of South Asian descent to lead a powerful federal circuit court, considered next only to the US Supreme Court.
  • Judge Srinivasan, 52, became the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.
  • Neomi Rao, nominated by President Donald Trump, is the second Indian American on this powerful judiciary bench.

India’s tallest pier bridge in Manipur

  • The Northeast Frontier Railway Construction Organisation has built India’s tallest railway pier bridge which is 100 m tall equivalent to a 33-storey building, across river Makru in the Tamenglong district of Manipur.
  • The ?283.5-crore bridge with a span of 555 m is part of the 111-km Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal new broad gauge line. It has 47 tunnels, the longest being 10.28 km.
