Congress leader Shamsher Surjewala passes away

  • Veteran Congress leader Shamsher Singh Surjewala passed away following prolonged illness. He was 87.
  • Shamsher Surjewala remained a five-time MLA and one-time Rajya Sabha MP. He was also the former president of the Haryana Congress and a former minister.
  • He was a president of the Haryana Krishak Samaj and fought for the rights of farmers.

Andhra Pradesh to have three state capitals

  • The Andhra Pradesh Assembly Monday approved a proposal to create three state capitals, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, and Amravati, to help decentralised development.
  • The government will be constituting Amaravati Metropolitan Region which will have legislative functions which means Amaravati will be the Legislative Capital. The Executive Capital will be Visakhapatnam while Kurnool Urban Development area will be the Judicial Capital.
  • The government also plans to do away with the AP Legislative Council where the YSRCP is in minority.

Brad Pitt and Laura Dern win Screen actors guild awards

  • Brad Pitt and Laura Dern won thetop prizes at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards.
  • Pitt won for his supporting role as a stunt man in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, while Dern was named best supporting actor female for playing a ruthless divorce lawyer in Netflix domestic drama Marriage Story. Both had also won Golden Globes earlier this month.
  • Jennifer Aniston won an award of her own for best female actor in a drama series for the Apple TV Plus show The Morning Show.

Wrestlers win gold medals in Rome Ranking Series

  • Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya have won gold at the Rome Ranking Series. Bajrang beat American Jordan Oliver 4-3 in the final, while Dahiya also bagged the top prize after beating Kazakhstan's Nurbolat Abdualiyev 6-0.
  • Vinesh Phogat won gold in the 53 kg women's category while Anshu Malik won silver in the 87 kg category.
  • Gurpreet Singh (82 kg) became the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win gold in a ranking series while Sunil (87 kg) won silver.

Mumbai to get mounted police unit

  • Mumbai Police will get a horse-mounted unit for traffic and crowd control after 88 years.
  • The unit will be taking part in this year’s Republic Day parade at Shivaji Park and if needed, similar units will be brought in for Pune and Nagpur.
  • The government at present has approved 30 horses, a sub-inspector, one assistant PSI, four havaldars and 32 constables for the unit, which will be successively set up in next six months.
