Veteran football commentator Novy Kapadia passes away

  • Veteran commentator and former Delhi University professor Novy Kapadia died in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. He was 67.
  • The versatile Kapadia was involved in commentary for decades and it was not just restricted to football. He has been a part of the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and other multi-sport events.
  • Kapadia, who founded the Ashoka Club and played active football in the local league, was held in high esteem by the players, officials, scribes.

India world’s largest recipient of remittances

  • India, the world’s largest recipient of remittances, received USD 87 billion in 2021 with the United States being the biggest source, accounting for over 20 per cent of these funds.
  • India is followed by China, Mexico, the Philippines, and Egypt.In India, remittances are projected to grow three per cent in 2022 to USD 89.6 billion.
  • Remittances to low- and middle-income countries are projected to have grown a strong 7.3 per cent to reach USD 589 billion in 2021.

US Senators move to block arms sale to Saudi Arabia

Tim Paine steps down as Australian Test captain

  • Australian Test captain Tim Paine has stepped down as captain effective immediately - Cricket Australia confirmed.
  • Paine's decision has come after an off-field scandal emerged, where he sent explicit texts to a female co-worker at Cricket Tasmania in 2017.
  • The board has accepted Paine's resignation, and will now look ahead to appointing a new Test captain. Tim will continue to be available for selection in the Test team.

Central government to repeal farm laws

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Central government will repeal the three contentious farm laws as it failed to convince “a section of farmers” about the “benefits” of the legislation.
  • Addressing the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, PM Modi said that a committee will be constituted to take decisions on making minimum support prices more effective and transparent.
  • After several rounds of talks between the government and farmer unions failed to end the protests, the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of three farm laws.
