CARTOSAT 3 to be launched on November 25

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its operational satellite CARTOSAT-3after a gap of six months.
  • Cartosat-3 is an advanced earth imaging and mapping satellite and will be flown on November 25 on the PSLV-C47 vehicle.
  • The 1,560 kg satellite will have 13 small U.S. customer satellites riding as secondary passengers. They will be placed in a polar orbit.
  • The satellite will be able to pick up objects of that size (25 cm) from its orbital perch about 509 km away. This will make Cartosat-3 among the few sharpest civil earth imagers worldwide.

Vodafone-Idea and Airtel to hike tariff charges

  • Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel announced that they will be increasing tariffs from December, although both telcos did not specify the amount of increase.
  • The telecom companies are reeling under the impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling on adjusted gross revenue (AGR), where they have to pay outstanding dues amounting of thousands of crores as fine towards the government.

Bhutan to levy tourist charges on Indians

  • Bhutan plans to levy charges on tourists from regional countries, including India, Bangladesh and Maldives, who at present are exempted from any charges.
  • According to the draft prepared by the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB), the new charges have been necessitated by the sharp increase in tourists from the region, mainly India, who cross over the land boundaries.
  • Experts say the measures could deter Indian tourists from visiting Bhutan, and may come in for criticism especially from those wishing to visit from bordering states like West Bengal and Assam.

David Attenborough selected for Indira Gandhi peace prize

  • The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2019 will be conferred on renowned naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.
  • His name was selected for the prize by an international jury chaired by former president Pranab Mukherjee, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust has announced.
