Infant deaths decline in Haryana

  • The Haryana National Health Mission clarified that 1,208 infants deaths were reported in the State between April and June this year as against 1,264 such deaths during the corresponding period in 2019.
  • Until 2019, an offline, manual reporting system was in use for compilation of births and deaths. Only limited information was collected in this system and hence age-wise deaths were not captured till 2019.
  • There were reports about Haryana registering a rise in deaths of infants between April and June 2020 with 1,208 infants deaths reported in these three months as against 828 such deaths during the corresponding period in 2019.

SC states PM CARE contributions need not be credited to NDRF

  • The Supreme Court has refused to direct the Centre to transfer the contributions made to the PM Cares Fund for battling the Covid-19 pandemic to the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
  • A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan said that voluntary contribution can always be made to the NDRF as there is no statutory bar under the Disaster Management Act.
  • The judgement came on a PIL, filed by NGO 'Centre for Public Interest Litigation, seeking a direction that all the money collected under the PM Cares Fund for the Covid-19 pandemic should be transferred to the NDRF.
  • The PIL had also sought a direction to the government to prepare, notify and implement a national plan under the Disaster Management Act to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dream 11 wins IPL 2020 title sponsorship

  • Fantasy sports platform Dream11 have made a three-year winning bid to bag the Indian Premier League (IPL) title rights. The company has made a bid for three years, subject to Vivo’s return next year.
  • The other two bids were from Byju’s and Unacademy for ? 201 crore and ? 171 crore, respectively. No more bids were received.
  • It was earlier reported that edutech startups Unacademy and Byju’s as well as the Tata Group had expressed interest in the title sponsorship rights of IPL 2020.
  • Vivo and the BCCI suspended a ? 440 crore per year deal for this season owing to the border stand-off between India and China.

SC directs CBI to probe Sushant Rajput case

  • The Supreme Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the Sushant Singh Rajput death case.
  • SC also upheld the Patna FIR and asked Maharashtra to assist the probe. Maharashtra has been asked to hand over all the evidence in the case to CBI.
  • The CBI registered a case against Rhea Chakraborty and others after Sushant’s father KK Singh filed a complaint with the Patna police against her and her family members alleging abetment of suicide.
  • The Patna FIR invokes IPC Sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 380 (theft in dwelling house), 406 (criminal breach of trust) 506 (criminal intimidation),120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating).

Ashok Lavasa resigns as Election Commissioner

  • Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa resigned to take up the position of vice-president at Asian Development Bank next month.
  • Lavasa, who would have retired as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in October 2022, would be the second election commissioner to step down from the poll panel before the completion of his term.
  • Last month, he was named as the new vice-president of the Philippines-based Asian Development Bank (ADB). He will succeed Diwakar Gupta, whose term will end on August 31.
