Stone Age chewing gum yield Human DNA samples

  • Danish scientists have managed to extract a complete human DNA sample from a piece of birch pitch , used as a kind of chewing gum.
  • The Stone-Age sample yielded enough information to determine the source's sex, what she had last eaten and the germs in her mouth.
  • It also told them she probably had dark hair, dark skin and blue eyes.
  • It is the first time that an entire ancient human genome has been extracted from anything other than human bones.

Star named after Indian scientist ‘Bibha'

  • A star in the constellation Sextans has been named ‘Bibha’, after Bibha Chowdhuri, a pioneering Indian scientist and also the first woman researcher-faculty at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1949.
  • Bibha is a yellow-white dwarf star located 340 light-years away. Bibha’s exoplanet has been named Santamasa, a Sanskrit word meaning “clouded”.

Supreme court refuses to stay Citizenship Amendment Bill

  • The Supreme Court has refused to stay the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) of 2019.
  • Chief Justice of India also asked the government to publicise the actual intent of the Act so that there was no confusion among the public about its objectives.
  • The act fast tracks citizenship-by-naturalisation process for “illegal migrants” from six religious communities, other than Muslims, who have fled persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Actor Shriram Lagoo passes away

  • Veteran actor Shriram Lagoo, a stalwart in Marathi theatre personality, movie and film actor, passed away. He was 92.
  • In Bollywood, Lagoo essayed memorable roles in films like Ek Din Achanak, Gharonda, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Laawaris. He played Gopal Krishna Gokhale in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi.
  • Apart from movies, Shriram Lagoo has also been a part of various TV shows.

Former West Indies cricketer Basil Butcher passes away

  • Basil Butcher, the former West Indies batsman, passed away on December 16 in Florida, at the age of 86.
  • He represented West Indies in 44 Tests, from 1958 to 1969, scoring 3104 runs at an average of 43.
  • In 1970, he was also named one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year.
