Maldives rejects ‘India Out’ campaign

  • The Maldives rejected attempts to propagate “false information” on social media using the so-called India Out slogan
  • The government of the Maldives has also requested all parties to act responsibly and desist from distributing incorrect information that could jeopardise the country’s relations with its neighbours.
  • The Maldives is witnessing a series of protests against Indian military presence for quite some time with allegations floating that bilateral cooperation between Male and New Delhi is undermining the national security and sovereignty of the island nation.

India to hold first 2+2 meet with Russia

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are likely to hold their first “2+2” format talks with their Russian counterparts.
  • The 2+2 format is particularly significant, given that India conducts joint foreign and defence ministerial only with its closest ‘Quad’ partners — the U.S., Japan and Australia.
  • Russia thus far has the 2+2 format for “problem solving” with countries like Japan, France and earlier with the U.S.
  • The 2+2 is also expected to look further in building India’s ties with Central Asia and Russia’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific.

Russia and China added to religious freedom blacklist

  • The United States has added Russia and China to a blacklist of countries singled out for “egregious violations of religious freedom.
  • Countries still on the US list for “religious freedom violations” are Myanmar, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
  • Nigeria has been removed from the list. Algeria, Comoros, Cuba and Nicaragua were placed on a watch list.

Former judge Rakesh Kumar Jain to monitor LakhimpurKheriinvestigation

  • The Supreme Court appointed the former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain, to monitor a time-bound investigation into the LakhimpurKheri murders and violence.
  • A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and HimaKohli further reconstituted the Special Investigation Team (SIT) by appointing directly recruited IPS officers S.B. Shiradkar, Padmaja Chauhan and Dr.Preetinder Singh.
  • October 3 saw vehicles, allegedly belonging to a convoy of Union Minister and MP Ajay Kumar Mishra, mow down farmers and civilians who were holding a rally at Lakhimpur Kheri.

PuneethRajkumar awarded ‘Karnataka Ratna’

  • Kannada film star PuneethRajkumar, who passed away following cardiac arrest, will be conferred ‘Karnataka Ratna’, the highest civilian honour in the state.
  • The award has been given to nine achievers ever since it was instituted three decades ago. Puneeth is the second personality from the Kannada film industry to be given the award.
  • Karnataka Ratna was last awarded to Dr.VirendraHeggade for social service in 2009. Puneeth’s late father Rajkumar is among the first recipients of Karnataka Ratna award in 1992.
