UK to ban petrol and diesel cars from 2030

  • Britain will ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2030, a decade earlier than its previous commitment.
  • The government made the pledge as part of plans for a green industrial revolution that he claims could create up to 250,000 jobs in energy, transport, and technology.
  • The government said sales of new gasoline and diesel cars and vans will end in 2030, though hybrid vehicles can be sold until 2035.
  • Automakers have expressed concern about the target, saying the previous goal of 2040 was already ambitious.
  • The government’s green plans also include investments in hydrogen energy and carbon capture technology, and an ambition to generate enough wind energy to power every home in the UK by 2030.

Chang'e-5 set to be launched by China

  • China has moved a massive rocket into place in preparation for launching a mission to bring back materials from the moon for the first time in four decades.
  • The Chang’e 5 mission will be placing a lander on the moon that will drill 2 meters (almost 7 feet) beneath the surface and scoop up rocks and other debris to be brought to earth.
  • That would allow scientists to study newly obtained lunar materials for the fist time since the American and Russian missions of the 1960s and 1970s.
  • The mission is among China’s most ambitious as its space program continues to build steam since it first put a man in space in 2003, becoming only the third nation to do so after the U.S. and Russia.

Former cricketer Sudeep Tyagi announces retirement

  • Former India and Chennai Super Kings pacer Sudeep Tyagi announced retirement from all formats of the game.
  • Tyagi played four ODIs — from which he took three wickets — and one T20 International. He last played for India in 2010. He featured in 14 Indian Premier League matches for Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • Tyagi played 41 first-class matches from which he picked 109 wickets and also featured in 23 List A matches (31 wickets). He played two seasons in the IPL in 2009 and 2010.

Indian Americans Vivek Murthy and Arun Majumdar likely in Biden cabinet

  • Two eminent India-Americans, including former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, are among the potential Cabinet picks in the next Biden-Harris Administration.
  • Mr Murthy is a potential pick for the post of Secretary of Health and Human Services, while Stanford University Professor Arun Majumdar may get the post of Secretary of Energy.
  • Mr Murthy is currently one of the co-chairs of the COVID-19 advisory board of the transition. He has been a close associate of Mr Biden on coronavirus issues.
  • Mr Majumdar is a professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford who served as the first director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy and has been a top advisor to Mr Biden on energy related issues.

Madhya Pradesh to get Cow cabinet

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said the government had decided to set up a ‘Gau Cabinet’ for the protection and promotion of cattle.
  • The Animal Husbandry, Forest, Panchayat and Rural Development, Revenue, Home and Farmers’ Welfare Departments would be part of the Cabinet.
  • The decision is aimed at developing an alternative source of rural employment by harnessing the potential of cows and the resources available through it.
