  • Elon Musk is now the world’s fourth-richest person after Tesla Inc. shares surged 11 percent, closing at a record high and boosting his net worth by $7.8 billion.
  • The rise vaulted the Tesla co-founder past French luxury tycoon Bernard Arnault, the wealthiest non-American on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
  • Musk’s $84.8 billion fortune puts him within $15 billion of Mark Zuckerberg, number three on the ranking of the world’s 500 richest people.
  • Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, is poised to potentially pad his fortune further. The company is close to finalizing $2 billion in new funding that would increase its equity valuation to $46 billion.

Rakesh Asthana appointed BSF chief

  • Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) chief Rakesh Asthana has been appointed as director general of Border Security Force (BSF).
  • Asthana, a 1984 batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre who earlier served as CBI special director, will continue to hold additional charge as DG, Narcotics Control Bureau.
  • The government also approved the appointment of V S K Kaumudi, chief of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), as special secretary (internal security) in the home ministry.

Renowned filmmaker and actor Nishikant Kamat passes away

  • Filmmaker-actor Nishikant Kamat died at the age of 50 in Hyderabad. He was admitted to AIG Hospital on July 31 after complaints of fever and excessive fatigue.
  • In 2004, he made his debut as an actor in HavaAneyDey and as a filmmaker in 2005 with the commercially successful Marathi film DombivaliFast.
  • In 2015, Mr. Kamat directed Drishyam, which was among his biggest hits in Bollywood. The filmmaker also directed Mumbai Meri Jaan (2008), Force (2011), LaiBhaari (2014), Madaari (2016) and RockyHandsome (2016).

Hindustani singing maestro Pandit Jasraj dies

  • Music legend and the doyen of Indian classical vocal music Pandit Jasraj passed away. He was 90 years of age and was living in New Jersey state of United States.
  • Born in Haryana, Jasraj was a recipient of various prestigious awards including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
  • His musical career has spanned more than 80 years and led to numerous major awards. His performances of classical and semi-classical vocals have become albums and film soundtracks. Jasraj has taught music in India, Canada, and the US.

Former cricketer and UP government cabinet minister Chetan Chauhan passes away

  • Former cricketer and UP cabinet minister Chetan Chauhan passed away after succumbing to complications brought on by Covid-19. He was 73.
  • Chauhan, minister of sainik welfare, home guards, PRD, and civil security was a minister of legislative assembly (MLA) from the Naugawan Sadat constituency in Amroha. He had also twice served as a member of parliament.
  • As a cricketer he had been an opening batsman and represented India in 40 test matches after debuting in 1969 in a match against New Zealand.
  • He played his last match in 1981 against Pakistan and was also awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award for his contribution to Indian sports.
